NNE Winter Thread

Could not agree more. I feel like April is the most divergent month between VT and the rest of the US. It's just winter here and everywhere else it's summer basically.

I couldn’t agree more (and absolutely agree with Tamarack that we’re talking NNE in general).  But that’s why we like it isn’t it?

In April we typically have plenty of great snowpack in the higher elevations and get to keep skiing (with occasional elevation snow to boot) while places farther south get stuck in some sort of quasi-transitionary seasonal back-doored whatever with no snow.  Personally, I don’t even plan on any non-snow outdoor stuff (yard work, biking, hiking, kayaking, whatever) until around Memorial Day.  The lawn doesn’t really need to be cut until then, the trees aren’t really fully leafed out until then, and you can’t really count on warm weather until then (we do know how even June has gone occasionally of course).

A perfect case in point was yesterday afternoon – I was at my son’s track meet at MMU, and it was brutal.  Pouring, wind-whipped rain with temperatures dropping into the 30s F, people huddling under into/under any little covering or structure they could find.  I can’t believe they still held the meet, but I guess conditions were OK at the start before I arrived.  To me it’s a great example of what not to be doing this time of year, but I guess they have to start the season at some point before June… unfortunately.

Yeah skiing in April is great. But for those in the lower spots, good luck to you.

Still snow banks on my sheltered driveway and patches of snow in the yard and woods.  I love it at the mountain but does look pretty filthy at home haha.

But I do enjoy the longer snow season, can't complain I choose to live here.

I stopped watching the Masters because it made me miss Spring flowers esp the Azaleas, dogwoods every year.  (well that and not having cable or TV reception anymore).

if it's possible to have snow from T-Day through Easter and then melt in 3 hrs, that would be epic. You guys almost have that. But the drawn out mud season is tough. Now that I have kids, I appreciate the bare ground in Spring...lol.

I love the quiet days on the hill. Lots of time for lazy skiing and reflection. The doldrums of waiting for snow to melt are still better than the doldrums waiting for snow to fall

I hope everybody is ready for the springtime sh*t show that is about to unfold lol.

I just got on the forum and haven't read any thread but this one.  Looking at the 12Z GFS and last nights Euro looks like a lot of freezing rain and even snow for many of us.  Yet reading the Gray AFD these seem very meh other than heavy rain on Monday....

There have been some BTV NWS map updates as of the afternoon.  Winter Weather Advisories now cover the entire area from Vermont westward, and number on the projected accumulations map have been pushed south a bit and increased in some spots.  The point forecast here through Sunday night has been increased a bit to the 3-7”/4-8” range.

RGEM on board too... would be fun to end the season with even 3-6" of snow and sleet on April 14-15.

Oh how we pray this has a clue.

Unless you get them on skis as soon as you can... :) But I know what you mean about kids and outdoor play. It will be nice  to have a non snow-covered yard for them to play in.

Some solid bright banding this evening.  Steady precipitation for sure.

I just checked the gauge here and it’s got ~0.40” of liquid in it.

There have been a couple of tweaks to the BTV NWS maps related to Winter Storm Xanto.  There’s a Winter Storm Warning posted out west by Lake Ontario, although it appears to be for ice accumulations vs. any sort of increased snow.  Also, projected snow accumulations around here have been contracted back north a bit, resulting in a map somewhere in between the maps posted yesterday.

How is it in the woods?

Afternoon precipitation has started up here at the house, and it’s in the form of sleet, so apparently that’s the current depth of the cold air in this area.

I only skied empty trails, but talking with patrol on the first tram sounds like mid winter. Some bony entrances in the typical windswept spots, otherwise, all good

saw our first flakes this morning, still fits and spurts but the Mt is covered now is snow

Are you up in the Jay area now? If so, are you getting snow or sleet? Was thinking of heading up tomorrow, but it would take about 6" of snow to get me there. Drive is a good 1:45 in good weather.

Always!

steady snow since 3:30, yard is white here at 1100’. Always hard to tell what will fall in April. Odds are low for fresh snow skiing from here out

safe travels if you head this way

Looks like we have made the flip to all snow.

Yeah, same thing has happened here, just about the time I was reading your post.
