2017-2018 Winter Observations

Recommended Posts

TRI has recorded a trace or more of snowfall during four of the last seven days, likely will be five of the last eight when today's totals are added.  I am not sure how much the airport received after midnight.  Seems like the late-night Kingsport snow slid south of the airport.

Update:  The east side of town has only a trace.  Crazy.  West side had up to 2” of snow.

Certainly not exact since those are only three hour totals(had some snow already on raised surfaces before the burst), but a good graphic as to the wide differences in snow accumulations over the Tri-Cities.  There were places on East Stone Drive that had very little while areas west of I-26 saw up to two inches of snow.  Great example of how March systems hold surprises and tend to over perform in almost unpredictable places within a given local.

And one last note that tells you how crazy a difference elevation makes and how different the world is above 6000 feet. Newfound Gap is at 5000 feet. Their 24 hour temp range is 30-12 and they have a trace of snow on the ground. LeConte at 6500 feet was 19-6 for temps with 9 inches of snow on the ground.

Leconte ended up with over 12 inches, also don’t know how much Newfound Gap got but this is somewhere on 441 and it looks like at least several inches.

I got some really good pictures of Grandfather Mountain on my little drive yesterday. Beautiful scenery up that way. 480c00dfd27dcc035ac3a431560722cc.jpg84331234c12394574e1346c1f64e2d12.jpg3211f791e82a476d472f36ece40b2a2e.jpg
