Peak gust I can find so far is a oil rig that went directly through the NE "eyewall" and gusted to 63 knts.....the anemometer was at 275 ft as well....highest gust I can find at the surface on land so far is 30-40 knts or so, though I imagine the Miss delta saw 40-50 mph sustained winds....best chance for a hurricane force wind gust on land will be the islands off AL/MS in the next hr or two, but with no sustained wind reports of even mid level TS strength it looks like LA/MS/AL lucked out....

Yes! Think I heard that for Greenville county schools during Irma

Spartanburg County as well. I lived in PA all my life, and if they had that rule, school would be canceled most winter days due to wind and snow.  Irma closed Spartanburg schools for two days with winds that I described as no worse than a gusty cold front in winter.

Doubt there will be any wind issues inland, it was barely a hurricane at all at landfall and more likely a 50-60 mph TS...no real gust over the mid 60's and those where on the islands just off the MS coast. Only gust I saw to hurricane force where 275 ft up on a few oil rigs just east of the Miss Delta.....Currently winds gusting to around 30-35 near the center....the center also looks to have a bit more east movement to it than the forecast track suggest though its hard to nail down motion....impressive rain shield mts are gonna get quite a bit probably.

Epic downpours in store for today in west GA.  3-5” of liquid gold with some gusts to 30 today!  Pumped this is the second tropical system to come crashing though mby this year.    The video out of Biloxi when that northeastern eyewall came through last night around 1AM was pretty intense.  Likely sustained near or at hurricane force winds inbetween Biloxi and Mobile.  I’m anxious to see the top wind gusts once all is said and done.  Maybe it was just near hurricane force gusts and not sustained.  Either way it was rocking and a couple of casinos got hit with surge.

The MS coast is so fragile to hurricanes it dorsnt take a big or strong one to cause lots of damage with surge.

Biloxi data from the airport there...peak GUST was 46 mph sustained was 35 mph...no where near hurricane force, video is often deceiving.....you can see the wind go from E to SE to SW to W thats awesome....I guess there could have been a higher gust recorded in between obs though this matches the other sites around it well and all suggest peak wind gust onshore of 40-55 mph.

This site on Petit Bois island just off the coast of MS/AL had the highest winds I could find from a reporting station onshore with the highest gust being 66 mph.....it had sustained winds around 45-50 mph as well....they had 4-5 hrs of strong TS conditions at this location

You guys will get hammered with rain....looks like the rain shield might go a bit further east than thought as well....

That band near the center really brushed Biloxi.  The AFB is just west of the city and the band barely reached the west side of Biloxi.  Seeing winds not that impressive there isn’t surprising.  I’m not sure exactly where the video was taken but the winds were way over 45mph.  Somewhere between Biloxi and the AL border took it hard.

I guess its relative....I havent found anywhere that had sustained winds of hurricane force in fact about the highest sustained winds I could find is 50 mph...so this is pretty telling, these locations all went through the NE "eyewall", I did find a few spots on the MS/AL border at the port there that gust to 70 mph with a sustained wind of 50 but that again is TS force conditions. To me a hard hit is more than those kind of conditions, again though that is relative and you may consider that a hard hit....some of the surge footage was pretty good considering the storm strength...that area is probably one of the top surge prone coastal areas in the country and the approach angle was perfect for funneling the water in....

Yeah pretty similar to the other obs on the MS/AL border.....wonder if the NHC will leave it as a Cat 1 at landfall when they go back and do the post storm analysis. My guess is they probably will. Looks like peak gust were a bit higher than I thought more like 65-70 than 50-55...still barely a Cat 1 if it was one at all with a small area of winds so the US finally caught a break with a storm.

Serious rains headed for GA and the Apps.....

Icyclone has some good footage of that area.  Looks like hurricane conditions to me.  He has data he will pass along to the NHC.  Seriously doubt they find he was only a TS.

peak wind gust being reported by TWC was 75mph at Calvert Alabama. Thats a gust not sustained

If they have data that supports Cat 1 ( most likely HH drops etc)  even though no ground obs site recorded that data then its still a Cat 1 100%....there could have been a few small areas of Cat 1 conditions that where no instruments were able to sample those conditions as well so it will be up to them to see if the HH data and obs on the ground confirm Cat 1 wind strength but there was no where on shore close to sustained winds of 75 mph that I have found so far.  When you look at the radar loop and watch the area the core NE eyewall went over and then look at all the data points in that area it was well sampled and none of them validated Cat 1 conditions, though that one drop shown above was 72 mph sustained at the surface when the center was still mostly offshore east of the Miss Delta. So again there could have been a few small areas inside the eyewall that experienced sustained winds of 75 mph. The question is if no HH data supports 75 mph at the surface and no obs station recorded sustained hurricane force winds do they still call it a hurricane?

I think we're going to have a rain under-performance (here anyway), but a tornado/severe weather over-performance. Clearly a tornado watch should've been issued, as I think there have been 6 tornado warnings in the GSP CWFA thus far today.

Yeah, I've been saying rain bust for about 3 days now. I'd be happy to get1", that may not even happen! TWC had me at 2-3" on their local afternoon update!
