A little more of a subdued sunset this evening.

When I got to the pond, some crepuscular rays all over this image...

Once the sun cleared the bottom of the clouds, I turned around to the southeast and tried that direction. I attempted to hide my shadow in a tree shadow but that did not go so well. You can still see *me* as clear as a bell...

I figured the dry air would win this evening but I went out to the pond because there was some nice cumulus around pre-sunset.

Looking south east when I got there...

Looking due north from a side of the pond I do not get to much...

But I got kind of lucky. There was one cloud in prime viewing area for the local sunset...

That cloud was moving rather rapidly. By the orange flash it was straight overhead. Sorry I could not give you anything to give any kind of perspective with.

7V2A8810.thumb.JPG.f113043d7f4dd04cdcd92e8597284c59.JPG

By the red flash it had moved just east of overhead, but still not far enough to get any foreground objects in...

Looking at the vis satellite this afternoon, I saw a chance of a decent sunset.

Started out with a small sundog and a bit of a 22 degree arc. Both are rather faint though...

This evening I had no plans to head out to the pond. It was still raining when I walked to dinner. When I left after eating I was rather shocked to see some blue sky and the Sun peeking around clouds.  So I loaded up the car and headed out.

When I got to the pond there was a brief rainbow. Even vivid enough to be able to see the double rainbow...

The sky to the west when the rainbow faded...

Only a minute and twenty or so seconds later. This shows just how quickly the sky changes around sunset...

Even if the rest of the holiday weekend is a wash out, the sunset tonight made up for everything. Looking at the vis satellite I see that it cleared in Iowa and that was able to get the sunshine underneath the clouds in Illinois. Made for a spectacular evening at the pond.

As close to local sunset as it was going to get with that line in Illinois...

Stuck between a low pressure system to the south of me. A boundary to the north of me. And nothing overhead. So I picked looking to the south for this evening.

It may be hard to tell but the moon is perfectly exposed. In the full version and at 100% magnification it looks marvelous. Not bad for only 25mm.

Evolution of the post sunset color on the backside of the line of storms that rolled through this afternoon. All photos are oriented to the south.

In the first image, the color is just getting started down low. Also shows some mammatus and where it normally falls on the backside...

Hours of fun out at the pond this evening. Who needs TV at night when you have sky conditions and sunsets that look like this?

When I got out there, the view to the south east was a mass of cloud V's all running in that direction. The cool thing was when I got home I checked the GOES 16 images you could see those V's clear as a bell there also. I am going to miss if they ever move 16 to a different orbit.

The view when I actually got to the bank of the pond. Nice design...

On the far right of this last image is some of those elusive magenta reds. They do not happen often here but are always notable when they do. A perfect end to a perfect night of cloud viewing...

After dinner, looking at the vis satellite, I thought there was a sparse chance of the Sun peaking out around sunset. So I decided to make the trip out to the pond just in case.

This is what a sparse chance looks like...

Tonight the color was rather bleh. With a decaying shower to the south the blues and grays were rather overpowering. So I did all of these as B/W trying to make the cloud structures stand out a bit more.

Another kitchen sink night at the pond this evening. A little bit of everything.

When I got there pre-sunset, I really liked the design...

Post sunset, things really started to get fired up. This image I was trying for the quasi-mammatus in the upper right. I might have made it a tad too busy with everything else going on in the image though...

With the clearing starting from almost overhead, through Illinois and even beyond Iowa, it meant that there was a good chance of a good red flash. Here it was just getting started from the orange flash and edging into red...

More fun at the pond this evening.

A not-so subtle cloud shadow. Although I might have made a mistake here. In retrospect I probably should have shot this in portrait mode instead to better show off the shadow. Especially when it is as vivid as it was here. Each day I learn something more behind the viewfinder...

I checked the vis satellite around 6 p.m. and it looked like all the clouds would dissipate close to sunset so I figured on taking a night off from the pond. But as I was sitting on the front steps playing guitar, I saw some thick haze to the west as the Sun got lower and lower in the sky. I could not stand it. I bailed and grabbed the gear and headed out to the pond anyway.

I got there right at local sunset...

I wasn't sure if this evening would be any good at the pond. Was not sure if the clouds would get close enough from Illinois and if the complex in Iowa would kill the later color. I still went out, just in case of course.

With the 16-35. Those clouds are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy over there...

Like every where else in the Midwest, hazy, hot and humid is the catch phrase for the day. All the photos look like they were taken through sheer curtains.

All kinds of clouds today.

This afternoon I was clicking through the TV and came across the NASCAR race. They were red flagged because of lightning but they showed a shot from turn one down the front stretch. Which just happens to be in the direction of my house. I saw some mini towers going up. SO I looked out the front door and sure enough, there was a tower going up right in front of me. I grabbed the camera and walked out to the front steps and this is what I got...
