griteater Posted January 2, 2017 Share Posted January 2, 2017 What winter storms have you missed while being out of town with work or vacation...or maybe while living away from your home area for a few years? Which miss stung the most? Also, what good winter storms have you experienced while being away from your home area? My lists... Storms missed: 1. Jan 1996 - I was living in Louisiana for a few years in the mid 1990's and missed the big snow and ice storm across NC, and blizzard over the mid-Atlantic 2. Jan 2000, Carolina Crusher - I was skiing in Snowshoe and saw the low slowly spinning there off the Carolina coast on The Weather Channel (so unusual to see that). I was living in Jamestown, NC just outside of Greensboro at the time. Drove back from Snowshoe and I remember there was hardly any snow just west of Winston-Salem, but I arrived home in Jamestown with a foot of snow on the ground. 3. Feb 2014 - I was in Detroit on business and missed this one, a foot of snow at my home north of Charlotte. Flights were backed up for a few days due to the weather so I rented a car and drove home. Missing this one stung the most due to missing the heavy snow rates on the morning of Feb 13. Storms While Out of Town: Wife and I were fortunate enough to catch an incredibly light and powdery 14-20 inch snow in Steamboat, CO in Feb 2005. Awesome skiing. It was so depressing to watch areas south and west of us get crushed, then it turn to pathetic bouts of light sleet and freezing rain by the time it reached much of NC. I was in Raleigh for that one. Went to ASU from 01-04 and had a killer NWSF event. We got 19" where I lived ( sugar grove). This was over a three day period in December of 03. I did get to enjoy the snow in Raleigh on that one but by leaving home in Asheville I missed what may be the only chance for a white Christmas I will ever have. burrel2 Posted January 2, 2017 Share Posted January 2, 2017 I have to be in Savannah for a work conference this weekend; however, I will make up an excuse and go home Friday night if needed. I have also never traveled in the winter time for fear of missing the big one. This winter we have planned a trip snow skiing in colorado for Jan. 14 to 21st. lookingnorth Posted January 2, 2017 Share Posted January 2, 2017 I've never missed a big storm yet due to travel, but I'm going to San Diego (to visit my grandparents) from the 11th to the 16th and there's a first time for everything. After that I'll be back in Norman, OK, and my odds of missing something are about as good as my odds of getting something. I don't want to travel to less snowy places in the winter often, but I'm happy to visit my family in Kentucky because they're more likely to have snow. calculus1 Posted January 2, 2017 Share Posted January 2, 2017 I almost missed the Christmas 2010 storm. We woke up in the Asheville area to the snow coming down. Had the kids open up their presents really early with their grandparents so we could leave before the roads got too bad. Made it back to Hickory late morning and was able to enjoy a white Christmas at home. My wife wasn't too happy with my decision to leave, but I couldn't bear the thought of missing out on a white Christmas IMBY. That hurt bad and still does. 43" fell in Syracuse in 24hrs. That's almost 2"/hr for 24 hrs straight. Eric Posted January 3, 2017 Share Posted January 3, 2017 I was attending ASU in Boone during the March 1983 snowstorm. The forecast was for a big snow in Boone, but the storm slide to the south. I had to experience the storm vicariously through phone calls home and listening to observations on my weather radio from the Charlotte NWS. It was surreal to hear reports of heavy snow at home while it was sunny in Boone. Visible satellite image showing snow cover from Georgia to North Carolina. nrgjeff Posted January 3, 2017 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Christmas 2010 I missed 3-4 inches of snow in Chattanooga. Where was I? If it was skiing or even somewhere warm and tropical it might have been tolerable. Nope! Cold rain and 40 in Texas! So, I traded the best possible white Christmas scenario for the worst possible Christmas weather - cold rain. I'm still sick thinking about it! Consolation, I was in DFW for light snow on Christmas Eve in 2009 - even more impressive by the climo. However with cold rain falling it did not help ease the debacle in 2010. Beach and stayed with her that week instead of coming home to Marion, NC. Well we had been in a serious heavy snow drought with only 4 inches of snow in the past 4 years for my hometown..
