Event totals: 0.4” Snow/0.03” L.E.

The final arctic frontal passage from yesterday dropped 0.4” of snow, with a bit more density than the previous one since some of the flakes were a bit more in that “arctic dust” style.

Details from the 6:00 A.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 0.4 inches

New Liquid: 0.03 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 13.3

Snow Density: 7.5% H2O

Temperature: -5.8 F

Sky: Partly Cloudy

Snow at the stake: 7.0 inches

Now that the temperature advisories are expiring, the snow advisories can take priority on the maps, so I’ve added the latest ffrom the BTV NWS below for what’s being called Winter Storm Decima.  This is generally a 3-6” type of event with a bit more expected down in Southern Vermont, so Winter Weather Advisories are plentiful in the region.

The QPF for our site suggests about a third of an inch of liquid equivalent as frozen, and a third of an inch of liquid as non-frozen, so it’s looking like a moderate event.  Hopefully it will help bolster the snowpack.

Event totals: 3.5” Snow/0.23” L.E.

I wasn’t really around to follow the storm from home because I was out in it at Stowe for a training day.  Skiing was simply off the hook as it’s been the past couple of weeks.  Observations from today are below:

Details from the 6:00 A.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 0.9 inches

New Liquid: 0.05 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 18.0

Snow Density: 5.6% H2O

Temperature: 13.1 F

Sky: Snow (1-10 mm flakes)

Snow at the stake: 7.0 inches

Details from the 4:00 P.M. Waterbury observations:

New Snow: 2.6 inches

New Liquid: 0.18 inches

Snow/Water Ratio: 14.4

Snow Density: 6.9% H2O

Temperature: 22.6 F

Sky: Cloudy

Snow at the stake: 9.0 inches

I just cored the snowpack to see where it stands, and it has 1.28” of liquid in it.  It’s hard to imagine that it’s all going to melt down to nothing because of a bit of rain and temperatures in the 30s F, or that Mansfield’s 40”+ of snow with heaven knows how many inches of liquid in it is going to disappear… but we are south of the border.  I guess it’s possible they’re talking about something other than the international border?

4,8 inches here.  I got to learn how to use the snow blower.  Made much quicker clean-up of the driveway.

I actually pulled out the snow thrower today for the first time this season.  It was funny to think that we’re about 40 inches into the season and we’ve just had 15 days straight with snowfall, but it hasn’t really been needed.  It’s just been a slow, steady delivery of snow, and we’ve pretty much been able to just drive over it and pack it down.  The boys and I would go out to the end of the driveway and take out the plow berm with shovels for larger events, but it hasn’t quite been worth firing up the snow thrower.  Today’s storm seemed to be the tipping point though.

Some pretty gnarly icing at the moment with a temp of 22.4 (3 F spike in the past hour). Just a glaze as of now, but it'll get worse as the morning progresses. I don't expect many power outages from this, however. Me along with another classmate and our professor approximated very minor outages for VEC and GMP over northeastern VT using ArcMap. I'm not sure how much I can mention on this forum without getting 'heat' from VEC, GMP, or my professor so I'll leave it at that. I know I can't download images without approval, unfortunately. Sorry, guys.

Had 32F freezing rain at home and a car encased in ice this morning.

Drove a few miles up the road and it hit upper 30s pretty quickly above 1,200ft.

Pouring rain.  Roads were a mess of wintery mix, ice, left over snow, and ponding water.  That and driving with the wipers on high led to a fun commute up Mountain Road.

Warmest spot around is 45F at the top of the Quad.

I agree about VTrans. They switched to some system that encompasses all three NNE states but it sucks, not nearly as good as it used to be. A colleague emailed them after that freezing rain cluster**** a couple of weeks ago and they replied by throwing the State Police under the bus. They told her that VSP were good about reporting every deer that gets hit but fail to report poor conditions. Anyway 511 has sucked this year.

Edit: Ugh, responded to the wrong post.

Well they better be ready today into tonight. The roads are wet and already have some ice on them. This cold front is going to flash freeze them bad. If VTrans isn't working now to salt and prepare roads, Monday am is going to be bad bad bad.

Event totals: 3.5” Snow/0.88” L.E.

Snow started to mix in down here at the house at 12:20 P.M., and the precipitation is over to all snow now.  I cleared the additional liquid out of the rain gauge to get a number on the liquid portion of the event, which totals 0.65” in combination with what I found this morning.  So the 0.88” from this event thus far is from 0.23” frozen and 0.65” liquid.

Facebook friend reporting seeing people snowmobiling on Conway Lake today  and said 2 days ago there were open spots.  Is it even close to safe?

No but there are many idiots. I suppose they could have drilled and checked the ice thickness in numerous spots but my guess is they didn't. Oh by the way, snow just started here!

Yeah we changed to snow around 11:30am at the mountain and picked up a dusting before it blew out.  And the dusting has also blown to Montpelier I bet in these 40-50mph winds coming out of the Notch.

Temp has dropped from 45F at the top of the Quad to 19F now.  Flash freeze on steroids right now.  26F in the base area.  Skating rink commences.

That's crazy that snowmobiles are out on the lakes.  Much of Newfound Lake skimmed over 2 nights ago.   Then just several hours later our snowstorm hit.  So yesterday much of the lake was white with snow but the ice must have been barely thick enough to hold the snow.  To someone not informed it looked like you could just walk out on the lake.  Extremely dangerous for man or animal.

I called my neighbor who plows my driveway  (and 40 others) on Friday and told him not to plow after yesterday's snow.  Asked him to wait until late this afternoon or evening.  Better to have the ice crust on the snow and not a sheet of ice on the driveway.  Anyhow he's a great guy and has not plowed me yet.  He plowed the 39 other driveways late yesterday afternoon and now is spending his Sunday sanding because of ice everywhere.  At least I will have a dry non slippery driveway all week.

Looks like I'll end the torch  (41F)  with 7" of glacier left.
