I have actually done one every year on the weather boards since 2007, and usually try to wait until snow is done to post it. After two severe winters, a much milder, tamer winter this year, though not without its snow. DTW saw 6.0" & mby saw 4.9", and this first measurable snow ended up the largest of the season. It was the only real snow of November (other than a dusting on the 23rd), but it stayed on the ground and trees for 4 days which made for Currier & Ives scenes. The 6.0" at DTW was good enough for 5th largest Nov snowstorm on record at Detroit. A slushy coating on the 3rd and a powdery dusting on the 19th were the only measurable snowfalls, but 0.6" of sleet fell on the 28th in a raging ice storm. 12-28-15...icy JANUARY 2016 - 9.2"A much colder month (though still slightly warmer than normal). No big storms occurred, though back-to-back 3-inch snowfalls from the 10th-12th brought the snow depth to 6", which would be the deepest of the season (quite a contrast to the double digit depths for months on end the last 2 winters!). After a week of solid snowpack mid-month, a January thaw melted much of the snow and the remainder of the month was mainly dry with patchy snowcover & frequent flakes that didnt add up. 1-5-16...flurries up close 1-10-16...winter roars in with a 3.4" snow, blowing snow, howling wind, & rapidly plummeting temps, going from the 40s at 7am to the teens & well below zero wind chills by noon 1-12-16...another 3-inch snow leaves a half foot of powder on the ground 1-14-16...winter Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
michsnowfreak Posted April 16, 2016 Author Share Posted April 16, 2016 FEBRUARY 2016 - 9.8" Bitter cold and white was the story for the heart of the month, but it started mild and ended with a roller coaster of temps with a snowstorm in between. The highlights, snow-wise, were a 2.8" snowfall on the 9th/10th which ushered winter back in, and a 4.5" storm on the 24/25th which was the 2nd largest of the season (this storm dropped 5.2" at DTW). Temp-wise, the only below zero morning of the winter came on Valentines Day. 2-9-16...winter returns 2-12-16...arctic front brings whiteout squalls 2-15-16...another day, another nickel and dime snowfall 2-17-16...another light snow, this one full of sparkles 2-25-16...winters 2nd largest snowstorm drops 4.5" here, much more to my north Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Three snowfalls hit, the largest being 3.3" on the 1st which included a rushhour gridlock whiteout. Once the snow melted on the 7th, the remainder of the month was largely spring-like. 3-1-16...rushhour whiteout...3.3" falls in a few hours. A few hours of freezing rain before changing to snow left a sheet of ice under the snow 3-3-16...another snowy night, this time a more gentle, but steady, 2.7" of sugar snow fell 3-5-16...Another March snow drops 1.5" 3-6-16...gray, damp day as warmer weather nears APRIL 2016 - 2.1" The first half of April was very cold. From April 2nd-10th, snow fell on 8 of the 9 days, with measurable snow falling on 4 consecutive days Apr 7-10. Only one longer stretch of consecutive days of measurable April snow has been seen in Detroit. However while the flakes flew nearly constantly, it was largely just a smattering of dustings here, the heavier accumulation to our north and even south. 4-3-16...Frozen April sunrise...what remained of yesterdays 0.4" of snow was frozen crust 4-8-16...Opening Day started with a dusting of snow! 4-9-16...April whiteout dropped 1.1" in less than an hour 4-10-16...last measurable snow of the season drops 0.2" Thats a wrap on the 2015-16 season. With 35.0" imby and 35.3" at DTW, while certainly a subpar winter, it was actually snowier than one would expect from a super Nino (this is only 7" below normal)...and Detroits northern burbs had an above average season. Since 2002 imby... 2015-16: 35.0" - 37 days w/ 1"+ snowcover 2014-15: 48.5" - 74 days w/ 1"+ snowcover 2013-14: 96.2" - 95 days w/ 1"+ snowcover 2012-13: 47.9" - 52 days w/ 1"+ snowcover 2011-12: 25.5" - 20 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2010-11: 69.4" - 81 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2009-10: 46.1" - 58 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2008-09: 64.8" - 62 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2007-08: 78.2" - 69 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2006-07: 36.3" - 49 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2005-06: 41.9" - 46 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2004-05: 80.7" - 65 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2003-04: 38.0" - 60 days w/ 1"+ snowcover2002-03: 69.0" - 67 days w/ 1"+ snowcover Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
