November was the warmest on record, December by far the warmest on record, January and February 2-3 degrees above normal and March the 4th warmest on record. To have a couple of record lows during this record warm stretch of weather is surprising, to say the least.

The extreme nature of the blocking patterns can still produce record cold temperatures and snowstorms

despite the record warm background state. That's how NYC can register the heaviest daily snowfall

and a below zero reading during the second warmest winter on record.

In addition, the two low temperatures of 29° or below (4/4 and 4/5) are the most since 1995 when there were 3.

Yeah, very impressive. It will be interesting to see if the models are correct in forecasting the first record low

temperature for NYC in April since 1997 on 4/10.

The record -EPO delivered on late season cold and snow in the Northeast the last few days. And we'll

see the potential for record cold 4/10 with the big -AO drop.

Assuming the guidance is reasonably accurate, I believe there's a good chance that many record lows will fall across the region.

12 hours of freezing in the city.

What dies, and what survives?

Pretty much everything that is out naturally right now will survive. Like I have been saying it's the plants (annuals especially but even some perennials) that were brought from down south or out of hot houses that are screwed. I have all my installations on hold until further notice

It does look like it could be close if the guidance is correct. Both the GFS MOS and Euro raw 2m get NYC to

a tie with the record low of 28 degrees on 4/10.
