Jan 23/24 2016 obs/nowcast - the fight for the North

Recommended Posts

As I mentioned in the other thread I am in Brattleboro and now have sunglasses on watching the wall of clouds retreat south.

21F

Keep them handy for the ride home.

I love that radar loop, Will--what a wall that's hitting.  While some minor placement changes, the general appeal of that wall was steadfastly modeled.

Kevin, I think you get into that band se of you. In fact you may get deformed for hours.

It'll be close dude. I've been thinking since early yesterday it set up nearby..but more likely over JC-CT 15 miles south of me

Been snowing good for hours here in New Haven. I drove to Westbrook this morning, left HVN at 7:30 just as the first flakes were falling, by the time I got back home an hour and a half later, it was already treacherous driving with several inches on the ground. No problem with virga here, we seem to be getting what the radar is showing. Just went for a walk... Heavy snow and windy: you definitely know you're in a major snowstorm.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
ONE INTENSE SNOW BAND MOVED THROUGH NYC AND LONG EARLIER...AND IS
NOW IN THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY AND SOUTHERN CT. ADDITIONAL BANDS
OF HEAVY SNOW CONTINUE TO FORM OFFSHORE AND LIFT UP INTO THE AREA
ATTM...THEN BANDING TO THE WEST OVER PA SHOULD PIVOT THROUGH LATER
TODAY INTO THE EVENING. EXPECT SNOWFALL RATES OF 1-2 INCHES TO
CONTINUE IN/NEAR MOST OF THE BLIZZARD WARNING AREA THROUGH THE
DAY...WHICH IN TANDEM WITH ACCUMULATIONS ALREADY AROUND A FOOT IN
NYC SHOULD LEAD TO ACCUMULATIONS MOSTLY IN THE 20-25 INCH RANGE
FOR LONG ISLAND...NYC...SOUTHERN WESTCHESTER/FAIRFIELD...AND
NORTHEAST NJ...AND EASILY MAKE THIS A TOP TEN SNOWSTORM FOR NYC.
THE ALL TIME RECORD OF 26.9 INCHES LOOKS SAFE FOR THE TIME
BEING...B
UT ULTIMATELY THAT WILL DEPEND ON THE DURATION AND
INTENSITY OF BANDING MOVING THROUGH LATER TODAY.

IN BETWEEN BANDS OF HEAVIER SNOW...SOME GRAUPEL OR SLEET HAS
ALREADY BEEN OBSERVED AND COULD BE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE EVENT.

Here's the push...it's now or never for central CT as things are gonna pivot there soon...further east it should try and lift north for the next 4-6 hours before pivoting.

Thats how close this is; youre 12 miles south in SN+ and Ive barely got light flurries.

I think it gets to you soon. It's really ripping here, blowing and all!! Very Impressive! An inch down and very nice snow growth.

Moderate to heavy snow now in Wickford. High wind so the snow is falling horizontally and not settling on the ground, at least this close to the bay. 33/33 with wind about 32 mph sustained.
