Waterspout Meteorology

Recommended Posts

Hello.

Have done research on waterspouts here in New England.

Search papers written by Dr. Joseph Golden.  He did a lot of groundbreaking research back in the 60s and 70s off the Florida coast.  Also a lot of research done around the Great Lakes.  There is a website out of Canada that has good information.  Check this out:  http://www.icwr.ca/

You can also search "winter waterspouts" and see some cool video on this.  NWS Burlington had an episode in 2009 on Lake Champlain.  Check this out:  http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/events/15Jan2009/overview.shtml

Here's another paper out of Melbourne, FL:  http://www.srh.noaa.gov/images/mlb/pdfs/EmployingtheWSR88DforWaterspoutForecasting.pdf

Here's another paper from Mariner's Log:  http://www.vos.noaa.gov/MWL/dec_04/waterspout.shtml

See if you can find info from AMS or NWA as well.

Hope this helps.

<snip>

In addition, to the paper in Turtle's link, forecasters from our office have posted several more papers on waterspouts and forecasting..

Just search for "waterspout" on this page...  http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mlb/?n=research Piggybacking on the papers provided will ultimately send you to several earlier/seminal references on the subject. Happy researching!
