Im sorry, I didn't know NYC, Brooklyn, and LI was representative of the entire area. Congrats to Brooklyn and LI cashing in once again, doesn't even matter what season it is anymore. They will find a way. Accept the fact yanks, this was a snl and ct storm. There are two diffrent Long Islands. One had a legit severe storm. (I'm sure there were winds above 60 unsampled) and some big hail. Te other had 5 minutes of drizzle. CAPE would have been ridiculous if we had had full sun and then built cumuls towers in the way of classic summer thunderstorms. The sun was always hazy/obscured today.Also, the surface low and best height falls were north..the mid-level ridging was a tad too strong. Everything has to be perfect for severe in the Northeast. Big Jims Videos Posted June 24, 2015 Share Posted June 24, 2015 South Jersey has its worst damage since the derecho. Slight/enhanced/moderate mean jack squat to them right now. It's really really bad. I got myself to Mount Laurel in the tornado warned cell. Witnessed rotation about a mile to my south over towards Marlton on the leading edge of the shelf cloud. Rotating curtains of rain then swept through with the first wave of damaging winds. The rains picked up and two waves of what I assume were downburst winds then hit over the next 5 minutes. No hail, and as the storm pulled away the most intense lightning began with hundreds of CG strikes all around. Trees fell all over neighborhoods onto homes, into homes, and crushed cars. Was very lucky I was on somewhat of an industrial type road and not blocked getting back to 295. My friends neighborhood in Deptford is impassable for the most part. Here in Austin this spring was the first time I've seen hail in I can't honestly remember how long, and stronger straight line winds than maybe once I remember in Long Beach, while Mineola has seen these conditions numerous times over the last decade. It's interesting that the larger areas of convection went north and south of Long Island which can often happen. But the North Shore severe was the result of a discrete cell that formed over New Jersey and strengthened moving across NYC onto LI. Funny how things work out since the models were more in MCS mode throughout the day. Models can often give you the severe signal, but the way things play out can be different than expected. Such is the world of convection.
