It was a good rally though, from what I was expecting this morning. Looks like there's some filling in on ILX's radar at the moment, but not sure if it'll move north of us...or if it'll stay snow.

Just measured - I think I'll hit 3" by the time the dry slot moves in. The latest HRRR is promising - brief break but it quickly fills back in.

1029 AM CST SUN FEB 1 2015

...blizzard warning now in effect until midnight cst tonight...

...winter storm warning is cancelled...

the blizzard warning replaces the winter storm warning.

* timing, snow, heavy at times, will continue through this

evening. blizzard conditions will also develop, especially

near the lake and in more open areas.

* winds/visibility, northeast winds will increase to 20 to 30

mph with gusts to 40 mph this afternoon, with even stronger

winds near the lake. the combination of falling and blowing

snow will frequently reduce visibilities to near zero in white

out conditions late this afternoon and evening.

* snow accumulations, 12 to 16 inches, with isolated totals up

to 18 inches possible.

* main impact, snow covered roads will make travel difficult. by

afternoon, the combination of the snow and very strong winds

will make travel extraordinarily dangerous.

* secondary impact, the combination of strong northeast winds and

snow covered power lines may lead to isolated power outages.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

a blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are

expected or occurring. falling and blowing snow with strong winds

and poor visibilities are likely. this will lead to whiteout

conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. do not travel. if

you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. if you get

stranded, stay with your vehicle.

3" sounds good before dry slot. And yeah, HRRR is a little more encouraging. Total snow globe right now. Very pretty.

Wow. Those are really great pics, it looks beautiful out there. The snow here is totally different, very powdery and blowing around all over.

Looking at some of the traffic cams in southeast michigan it looks like it's coming down good around 96 and wixsom rd. any snow reports?

Heavy band came through Ann Arbor in the last 20 to 30 minutes. Hard to measure well - it's blowing and powdery, but 3"-ish so far I think.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE IL
1036 AM CST SUN FEB 1 2015

UPDATE

1031 AM CST

WE HAVE INCREASED SNOWFALL AMOUNTS SOME THIS AFTERNOON...ESPECIALLY
ACROSS NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND FAR NORTHWESTERN INDIANA. A VERY
IMPRESSIVE SYSTEM CONTINUES TO DEVELOP ACROSS THE CENTRAL CONUS THIS
MORNING IN RESPONSE TO A STRONG PV ANOMALY OVER THE CENTRAL PLAINS.
AS THIS STORM CONTINUES TO INTENSIFY THIS AFTERNOON...MODEL GUIDANCE
SUGGESTS THAT A BAND OF STRONG FRONTOGENESIS WILL DEVELOP IN AN
EMERGING DEFORMATION ZONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE 700 MB LOW...RIGHT
ACROSS NORTHERN ILLINOIS. THIS ALSO LOOKS TO OCCUR DURING THE
PERIOD OF BEST STRONG MID/UPPER LEVEL Q-VECTOR DIVERGENCE
ASSOCIATED WITH THE MID/UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM. ALL IN ALL THIS POINTS
TO STRONG DYANAMICS SUPPORTIVE OF PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW THROUGH
THE DAY TODAY...AND LINGERING THIS EVENING. IT APPEARS THE
HEAVIEST AMOUNTS WILL EXCEED A FOOT IN MANY AREAS...WITH A FOOT
AND A HALF NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION FOR NORTHERN ILLINOIS.

THE OTHER CONCERN IS BLIZZARD CONDITIONS...WE ARE UPGRADING THE REST
OF NORTH CENTRAL ILLINOIS TO A BLIZZARD WARNING. NORTHEASTERLY
WINDS WILL ONLY INCREASE THROUGH THE AFTERNOON...WITH GUSTS
POTENTIAL UP AROUND 40 KT AT TIMES GIVEN THE STRONG GRADIENT SETTING
UP ON THE BACK SIDE OF THIS SYSTEM. THIS HAS ME SERIOUSLY CONCERNED
THAT AS THE SNOW CONTINUES TO BECOME MORE POWDERY THROUGH THE
DAY...THAT WHITE OUT CONDITIONS WILL BE OBSERVED ACROSS NORTHERN
ILLINOIS. THE OTHER CONCERN IS FOR DOWNED TREE BRANCHES AND POWER
LINES. THE SNOW THAT HAS FALLEN THUS FAR ACROSS THE AREA HAS BEEN A
STICKY WET SNOW AND HAS PRODUCED SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS ON TREES
AND POWER LINES. THE INCREASING WINDS COULD BRING DOWN POWER
LINES...LEADING TO SOME ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES.

Attempted to take a sounding.

Not sure what happened, but the sonde hit the wall of the obs deck, causing the de-reeler to de-reel too fast.  Long story short, our weather balloon is now dancing in the wind on top of the art & music building next door.

I hope they don't see this as an act of aggression against them...
