So, I thought it might be interesting to see what the previous top 10 seasons on the list (other than 2013-14) produced the following winter. Detroit was extreme in 1981-82 to 1982-83...it was muddled somewhat by a snowy Spring, sort of masks how terrible the winter really was. Its even worse when you compare things that dont show up in the simple season snowfall totals (temps, snowdepth, etc). But nothing beats 1880-81 to 1881-82. That was ridiculous. Great work Tim. Totally cosmetic, but one minor tweak...Detroit saw 93.6" in 1880-81. Otherwise, excellent! Hopefully 2014-15 doesnt look too bad in the end. Averaging the top 9 (since we cant include 2014-15 yet lol) follow-up seasons for Detroit, it comes out to be right around the long term average interestingly enough. Just browsing several of the cities, it appears that average is the way to go after a top 10 season, which is actually quite surprising as I expected generally below normal snow to show. Which it does show, especially in the extreme cases of 1881-82 & 1982-83 (more data here, tho Im sure if the entire midwest had records in 1880 wed see ungodly comparisons). But when you look at the top 9 follow-up winters and average them, they are near average for Detroit (and by first glance, many of the others as well).
