THE EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE IS INCREASED FROM 7.1 TO 8.0 IN THIS
STATEMENT.  HOWEVER... THE EARTHQUAKE IS TOO DEEP TO POSE A
TSUNAMI THREAT TO THE COASTAL AREAS COVERED BY THIS MESSAGE.
THE U.S. NATIONAL TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER HAS ISSUED A WARNING

Authorities have downgraded the tsunami warning that was issued for parts of Alaska's Aleutian Islands after a magnitude-8.0 earthquake.

Monday's quake generated small tsunamis, with waves of less than 7 inches, prompting the National Tsunami Warning Center to downgrade the warning to an advisory.

Small waves are still expected along parts of the Aleutian Islands stretching from Unimak Pass to Attu, and officials advised people to stay off the beaches.

The earthquake recorded at 12:53 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time was centered about 13 miles southeast of Little Sitkin Island or 25 miles north Amchitka Island, an area prone to earthquakes located about 1,300 miles southwest of Anchorage.

There were several strong aftershocks, but no immediate reports of damage.

The largest city near the epicenter is Adak, which has about 300 residents

The reason we are having more intense earthquakes and that they will become more intense is due to global warming. As the ice melts and the ocean levels rise, this puts more pressure on the tectonic plates.

      It's not a matter of if they weight the same thing. It's a matter of the ice is concentrated in one place but when it melts it spreads out all over the place, making the sea level rise, making the sea heavier and thus putting more pressure on the tectonic plates.

            It's a scientific fact that 1 gallon of water weighs more than 1 gallon of ice yes. However, one gallon of ice is less than a gallon of water when it melts because ice is less dense. You may have paid attention is Science class but your comprehension still needs some work...

                        You're the dumb one here. If it puts 20lbs over California it will put 20lbs over Australia too. It's a wash on the weight. You will never get a heavier mass of water over one tectonic plate versus any of the others. Also, more weight on the plates would STOP them from moving not increase their movement. We would have LESS earthquakes if that were to happen...

                          That's a complete falsehood. Not all earthquakes are caused by horizontal movement of the plates, many are vertical movements and you have nothing to back up your claim that vertical pressure would stop an earthquake from happening rather than trigger it. As for what you are saying about how water spread, you are still acting dumb. Even if the entire ocean rose one single inch, that would put enormous amounts of additional pressure on all the plates all over the world.

                            Yes enormous pressure on ALL plates equally. Therefore they would all have the same pressure being exerted on them. Once again its a wash. If you had additional pressure being placed on just one then it would make a difference but since water is a liquid it will automatically level itself out. You also have to factor in that not all plates have the same pressure on them in general. Some oceans are very deep and would put a large deal of pressure on the plates below it. How about those that are under land and close to the surface?

                              No it's NOT a wash. Only in your uninformed imagination does more pressure on all the plates someone void everything out. And you're forgetting the movement of the ocean itself, the currents, the pull of the moon. The ocean isn't just sitting there you know. Enormous, almost unimaginable weight and pressure is being sloshed around on an earth that is basically held together in pieces. Put more weight and pressure on and the only thing you're going to have is more volatility. You're just talking nonsense because you want to deny global warming exists. You'll just say anything to dispute the science, no matter how nonsensical.

                                Using your logic, distributing the weight should cause less earthquakes.

                                Moon / tidal correlation to earthquakes is very weak if at all, many studies done.

                                Seriously though, the hydrostatic pressure change from a one meter sea level rise will affect earthquake frequency and intensity very little compared to other factors like changes in pore-fluid pressure from dehydration reactions in a subducting slab, or injection wells if you like that subject.

    You say that as if it were fact, which is sad considering you just made that up. You are asserting that ice weighs less so when it melts will cause more pressure. One tiny little problem, IT WAS ALREADY PUTTING PRESSURE ON THE PLATES BECAUSE ICE IS JUST A DIFFERENT FORM OF WATER AND WON'T ADD TO THE WEIGHT ON THE PLATES.

    Good grief, this some basic science. I bet you talk in the same affimative manner about global warming, huh?

                There are really two arguments here and you're both right about part of what you're disputing. A cubic meter of ice weighs about a ton. Some of the melting glaciers in Antarctica are kilometers thick. As the ice melts, weight is removed from the tectonic plates under the glacier and evenly distributed throughout the oceans eventually. That changes the position of the plates. As global warming continues, more earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are predicted by many scientists. I just looked this up, it's not my field.
