I can't believe that 1977 was warmer than 2012 at South Bend.

March-April-May 1977: 44.1...55.4...68.6

March-April-May 2012: 52.8...49.5...64.7

April 1977 is the 2nd warmest on record for South Bend, and May 1977 is the warmest.

A warm second half of April will push the average temperature departure into positive numbers for IND. And thus, statistically, this will be the first above normal/positive departure month for Indianapolis since September 2013. Of course we'd usually call Oct '13 and Apr '14 near normal, but we're using technicalities here.

September 2013: 69.5º +2.6º

October 2013: 54.6º -0.4º

November 2013: 39.2º -4.4º

December 2013: 29.9º -1.7º

January 2014: 20.1º -8.0º

February 2014: 22.3º -9.8º

March 2014: 35.7º -6.5º

April 2014: 53.2º +0.2º

This year's first 70º temperature of the year was the 10th latest on record for Indianapolis (records since 1872). There still hasn't been an 80º reading at IND in 2014, but it looks like the middle or so of next week offers a good chance. No top 10 like the 70º threshold, but it may be worthy of a top 20 latest ranking.
