This is dtk, in the Mid-Atlantic thread. He's a met who works on the models at NCEP, talking about dropsondes: They get sent over the GTS so they get used by all the operational centers. By the way, we now have two comprehensive studies showing that these have minimal impact in both a mean, statistical sense and for individual, targeted events for current, state of the art DA/NWP systems. As Ian said in other posts, more data is obviously better (particularly the wind profiles we get from drops)....but it is really hard to justify the cost. I believe RGEM:GGEM::NAM:GFS Precip shield extends back throughout all of PA this run of the RGEM. Smacks Virginia then moves north and just has a weak NW precip shield and then explodes over New England. Talk about a snow dome... Still better than NAM... but not that great to be honest.
