Decision makers for Fairfax County Public Schools appear to have a policy of cancelling school if significant snow is forecast, even though not a flake of snow is on the ground during morning rush hour.  On the other hand, if driving is already hazardous early in the morning rush hour but the forecast was for only minor snow, they do not issue even a two-hour delay in school opening times. So I will boldly forecast that before this winter is over, there will be at least one day when the Fairfax County school system is shut down, but little or no snow will fall the entire day.

My prediction was too conservative: A second needless shutdown today.

Some between models distraction....inspired by yesterday's convo (and ongoing) but I crashed before I could finish. Song lyrics in need of a tune:

We're Gonna Get NAMed

the NAM is looking good at hour 84
just about to give us what we've all been hoping for
it's looking all amped, moving in for the kill
whatever we can't see our imaginations fill...

Chorus: Gonna get NAMed ooo we got NAMed! ooo ooo

the NAM gives us blizzards and it dumps the QPF
cut it in half and a ton of snow is left!
some people think it's lame and really has to go
but I'd be sad to miss all the digital snow...

Chorus: Gonna get NAMed ooo we got NAMed ooo ooo

it could be good for some things like maybe severe?
if other models back it up there's probably less to fear
if you want to be safe and not get in a jam
just relax, be cool, and don't extrapolate the NAM...

Gonna get NAMed ooo we got NAMed! ooo ooo, yes we did!  NAMed, ooo ooo etc.

Southern Maryland got snow so I can say that I'm happy,

that I didn't get shafted like PSU and Mappy.

but many up north just continue to whine,

even though they seem to get repeated snowfalls just fine.

And ers-wxman hates taking all your calls,

about anything related to upcoming snowfalls.

His office is too bullish with the warnings they hoist,

while Tenman is waiting for a package that's moist.

A cold front approached from the west

and The mid-Atlantic hoped for the best

the euro started teasin

but the GFS wasn’t seein

it mostly turned into a pest

because the Carolinas turned white

and New England got their bite

Yet our snow totals remain a complete fright

but we always remain on our snow quest

because in 8 weeks we all get a rest

mod modoki El Niño in fall would be blessed

Tis the tragedy of the Mid-Atlantic

To be so close but yet so far

To the South, the North, the East & West

Snow falls but not in our yar'ds

We chase models (but not the sexy kind)

In hopes of satisfaction

Yet often end up on the backside

Of all the joyous action

Snow holes galore

Weenies weenieing even more

Tis the tragedy of the Mid-Atlantic

I don't know how I missed this thread the first time around.  These are hilarious!

On Sunday night ensembles show
a signal for some weekend snow.

The GFS shows something too,
but nobody believes it's true.

I set my alarm to see
if it's still there at 06z.

On Monday night the CMC
shows us what we want to see.

The GFS still has it too.
Tomorrow I have work to do...

It's 1 a.m.  I stayed up late.
The Euro won't participate.

On Tuesday night it's out to sea
on the GFS and CMC.

The Euro too has nothing still.
The panic room begins to fill.

Well that's the end if it I guess...
but I'll wait for the EPS.

Wednesday is the best night yet.
Precip on the UKMET!

A MECS is on the GFS.
The Euro finally says yes!

A storm thread on the board is born
In the wee hours of the morn.

On Thursday night the models all
agree that lots of snow will fall.

The Euro, Ukie, RGEM, and
some new model from Switzerland.

I rub at my tired eyes.
So many maps to analyze.

On Friday night I stay up late
'til I start to hallucinate.

The radar's filling overhead.
I know that I should be in bed,

but I think I will stay awake
until I see a falling flake.

On Saturday snow piles deep.
I miss it all.  I'm sound asleep.

Aleet! Aleet! The weenies did cry

As promising first flakes

Tumbled from the dark sky

All night and all day

The flurries did flutter

Not leaving as much as a weak cutter.

The hard, frozen ground

Remained it's drab winter brown

Soft weenie sobs the only sound.

As the storm went away

It left a stiff breeze

That rapidly plunged all

Into a deep freeze.

I wish I was in Florida

"A traitor" you say.

But at least I could be fishin

In Key West today.

I have postponed bathroom breaks just to watch the snow. I broke up with a girlfriend because she didn't like snow. Snow is dandruff falling off the hair of god. The smell of the wood stove burning in the air during a snowfall makes my neurons go crazy. I live in the bury so it makes it more special to me when it does snow. That's all I have to say about that

Can relate. I choose my career specifically so that my obsession with snow and cold just seems like I'm very dedicated to my job rather than crazy.
