At 7 a.m. Monday, the mercury dropped to -15 at the city’s official thermometer at O’Hare International Airport breaking the record low for the date of  minus 14 established in 1988.

The day’s high of minus 2 was set  when the day began at midnight and will almost certainly not be surpassed,  thus breaking the days previous record low maximum of minus 1 established in 1912.

January 6, 2014 becomes the coldest January 6th in the city’s history dating back to 1871.

yeah mine was kicking on every 45 minutes or so.

That isn't bad....  i've had mine cycling as low as every 15 minutes.

Our big juicy van this morning had this... thank God for block heaters...  they make a HUGE difference.  I had mine on for 3 hours (timer) and it starts like its summer time ...just purrs...of course the rest of the vehicle is frozen so its still slow to move (grease is like caramel in these temps).

I scrounged up some CO-OP station statistics for the Geneva (hometown) and DeKalb (NIU, my undergrad alma mater) areas.  CO-OP data, based on observations taken in morning for the 24 hours preceding the observation, help capture the most significant aspect of this cold snap: the record-cold daytime temperatures ...

For the Geneva area ... At the NWS CO-OP observation site in Aurora (about eight miles away), where a high-quality climate record extends back to 1887, the data from this morning's daily observation are missing. However, at the CO-OP site in Elgin, where the climate record is more questionable, a low of -17 was recorded in this morning's observation at 0700; I am going to use that as a proxy for Aurora's low temperature for 6 January. Since 1887, there have been 104 occurrences of a low temperature equal to or lower than -17. There is a fairly high probability that the temperature will remain steady or even fall a degree or two during the day and that it will fall several degrees tonight, meaning that -17 will likely be nearly the daytime high and the high temperature recorded for tomorrow's daily, 0700 observation. There are no occurrences since 1887 of a high temperature equal to or lower than -17. In fact, the lowest high temperature on record is -12, set on 24 December 1983; the high was -11 on 15 January 1972 and 18 January 1994.
*Bottom line*: Today's daytime temperature and the high temperature recorded for 7 January (tomorrow) are likely to break the record for all-time record lowest, perhaps by several degrees.

For DeKalb ... At the NWS CO-OP observation site in DeKalb, where a high-quality climate record extends back to 1896, a low of -19 was recorded in this morning's observation at 0700. Since 1896, there have been 62 occurrences of a low temperature equal to or lower than -19. There are no occurrences since 1896 of a high temperature equal to or lower than -19. In fact, the lowest high temperature on record is -14, set on 19 January 1994; the high was -12 on 25 January 1897.
*Bottom line*: Today's daytime temperature and the high temperature recorded for 7 January (tomorrow) are likely to break the record for all-time record lowest, perhaps by several degrees.

The forecast for Dekalb, IL for tomorrow is a high around 0F.  The high in Aurora (at least the temp at 12:01am CST) was -5F.  Neither is close to a record low max.
