Notice the dates....by over 2wks this is the earliest significant snow on record

I remember walking to school in 1961 when we had our first freeze around this date...I was 12 years old...The puddles were frozen for the first time...That was the first sign of winter...No subtlely to the first sign the last two years...

Looking at New Brunswick's records, 16" was the snowiest November in 1898, then 1938 2nd place with 12".

However, for 12-13" to fall in early November in Monmouth County is definitely the biggest snowstorm this early in the season. I'd imagine it'd be equivalent to like mid/late April.

How was the 38-39 winter for the area? Find it very similar to what the area has experienced this fall..

Nice post Uncle. Here in Monmouth County, late Jan-late Feb 2010 featured 48" of snow, and late dec to late jan 2010-11 was around 55". We certainly can't complain.

Monmouth County does pretty well for themselves, snow wise.

I'm very interested to see what the rest of this decade has in store for us. In terms of climate cycles, the 2000s should have been similar to the 1950s given the transiton to -PDO, +AMO, and gradual decrease in the NAO. However, snowfall averages for the 2000-2010 period were the same as the 1960s (at least for me - 34.1" in the 2000s here, and New Brunswick recorded 34" in the 60s). So it'll be interesting to see the next several years given a continued -PDO, -NAO in the decadal sense, and an Atlantic that will generally cool in the next 5-10 years.

Can we pencil in two consecutive decades with big snowfall averages? We'll see. I feel like we had some bonus years in the 2000s that we didn't entirely deserve given the climatic cycles. Those early 2000s good winters were primary +NAO dominant as well (03-04, 04-05, 06-07, etc).

seven of the ten periods had near or above 6" of precipitation...A ten to one ratio would mean 60" of snow if it was all snow...1961 had the least amount of precipitation but was the coldest period...16 days in a row with temperatures below 30...Since 1971 precipitation is averaging 20% over what the average was from 1869-1970...Since 1994 we got five of the snowiest periods on record...I've lived through seven and the first one was the best...1961...

so what, if anything, do we make of the fact that we've gotten historic early snowfalls in back to back years?

I think they had similar happenings in Europe circa 1315 AD...mean temperatures then dropped about 7 F over the next 20 years...the native peoples in this area likely dealt with a climate more like current day Portland, Maine in the ensuing years.

I think the medieval war period was much longer lasting, or at the very least, the cold you are referring to did not take place until the 1700's with the little ice age. I think the Thames froze over then and the vikings were forced to leave Greenland.

The LIA started in the 1300s, however, the coldest period happened in the 1600s.

There was a short respite during the 16th century....then it got cold again.

Per tree rings and ice cores from Greenland, the first signs of a trend towards colder go back as early as 1200 AD....but as far as where most of the people lived...it was not experienced till the early 1300's.

nyc area has had some mind bogglingly good winter storms over the past ten or so years, incredible snowfall rates and deep snow, thunder snow.

past decade is really an amazing time down that way, during this last event it reminded me of 1/26-27/11 with the blinding snow and the dark greens and yellows on the radar just encompassing the whole metro area.

simply an epic stretch for you guys but climo has to rear its ugly head eventually.

you guys have experienced snowfall rates and rapid snowfalls (a foot in a few hrs etc) that i still have yet to see where i live. its all been to the south by at least thrity or forty miles.

That's what you think. Climo's overrated, besides we threw the climo gods a bone last year. This winter brings us back to the status quo of 40" winters in NYC, or in my case, 50" is now status quo.

a few years ago i was looking at the snow records from rutgers at new brunswick.

historically the numbers are extremely similar to central park. and i remember breaking the numbers down, and basically over a 100 year period.... (roughly 1895 to 1995).......

1/3rd of all winters had less than 20"

1/3rd had between 20 and 30"

1/3rd had over 30"

but as your numbers show, in the last 20 years only 2 winters had between 20 and 30"

that's kinda crazy.

I hope this early snow is not a repeat of last year and the winter ends up a bust. A man can only dream of more snow.

October snows seem to lead inexorably to busts. Think Octobers of 1972,1979 and 2011. November has a more mixed record. 1989 was followed by a bust. 1995 was quite definitely not.
