Historic Warmth Across the Midwest and Eastern United States

Recommended Posts

some of the NWS AFDs across the midwest are becoming entertaining to read.

This is clip from Gaylord, MI's AFD:

ALL THE WHILE...TRAVERSE CITY CONTINUES TO CLIMB

TOWARD 90...AND IF THAT SHOULD HAPPEN...IT WOULD BE THE EARLIEST

RECORDED 90 DEGREE READING BY ALMOST 5 WEEKS...WITH THE CURRENT

RECORD COMING FROM APRIL 29TH...1970. IN OTHER WORDS...IF THE

TEMP HITS 90...IT WILL NOT ONLY SMASH THE ALL-TIME RECORD FOR

MARCH...BUT IT WILL TIE THE ALL-TIME RECORD FOR APRIL AS WELL.

UNBELIEVABLE!

Something to that effect has already happened in St. Johns, New Brunswick in Canada. They are currently at 77 degrees, which sets the new all time record high for the month of March. The previous record was 63.5 degrees. They have also exceeded the all time record for the month of April, which was only 73 degrees. The type of temperatures that are being experienced right now for the month of March are unfathomable.

IMO, although Dr. Masters might be somewhat overstating the role the warming of the climate played, I believe it is a fair point to note that the warming climate made a contribution. Masters stated, "It is highly unlikely the warmth of the current 'Summer in March' heat wave could have occurred unless the climate was warming.". With or without the warming, the probability of the kind of event now unfolding remains extremely low. Nevertheless, the warming climate has increased the probability of such an outcome.

As I don't have the data Dr. Masters is using, I will use New York City for an illustration. In the below chart, I have compared the 1931-1960 and 1981-2010 base periods for New York City with respect to high temperatures in March. The following is the result:

Finally, because Dr. Masters mentions some readings were 4-5 sigma above normal in Michigan, I have also included the equivalent for such readings in New York City in the above table.

Statement as of 1:48 PM EDT on March 22, 2012

... All time record high departure from normal set at Grand Rapids

mi...

With a high of 87 degrees yesterday at Grand Rapids on the 21st and

with the normal high being 47 degrees the departure from normal was

40 degrees. That beats all time previous record of 38 degrees on

set on January 22 1894.

The mean temperature on the 21st was 74 degrees. That was the

highest daily mean temperature every recorded in March. It beat the

previous record of 72 set on March 29th in 1910. The previous

record for the 21st of March was 62 degrees in 1938.

That 74 degree mean also results in the all time record departure

from normal at Grand Rapids for any day of the year for the entire

period of record. The mean of 74 degrees was 37 degrees above

normal. No other day on record at Grand Rapids has had such a large

departure from normal. The previous record of 34 degrees happened

twice... once on March 8th in the year 2000 when the mean was 67

degrees and the normal 33... then and on March 13th in 1990 when the

mean was 68 degrees and the normal 34 degrees.
