NYC almanac for December 24th

Recommended Posts

A popular day for pre Christmas snow storms for sure. 95 was the first one in quite some time that led to a widespread white Xmas. I remember heavy snow in the morning and a lull most of the day getting nervous that we weren't going to see anymore. Later in the afternoon Heavy sleet quickly changed to snow and we picked up another 6" overnight

2009 of course alot of people hate, especially those that live in the interior as dry air ate up alot of the snow but was still a very healthy snowfall for most and an MECS for the midatlantic and LI. It also got very warm that xmas and rainy and all the snow melted by night by we still had snow on the ground christmas morning

Interesting to note the forecaster in the 1899 cold wave article, correctly  saw no immediate relief, but seemed to have no way of knowing of the big snow that would ensue in just 2-3 days.

Pretty cool that the link you posted is for the whole paper that day not just the front page article about the snowstorm.  Take a look at the picture on page 2 where it shows the guy taking a snow depth measurement in Central Park and it says the depth is 30", that's pretty cool.  There are some cool articles like the ones in the two right column of the front page, 45 Polaris subs being built and a Sputnik launch.  I wonder what other goodies are in there.

They must be referring to a drift of 30 inches or adding a pre-existing snowcover to the current blizzard's new snow.

Interesting a small shirt pocket 6-transistor radio cost  $30 in 1961.   This is like walking around with a $300 dollar cell phone today.   An even more expensive $75 dollar deluxe model w/o batteries, probably 4X "AA" which were not mass produced like today; is in the same ad..   Imagine the vendor believed the perspective buyer (equivalent of $750 in todays bucks---despite the fact the unit could be produced today for $3.00 with batteries)  would be scared off if the battery cost was added in!!  Also these prices are actually way down from the early 50's intro models.   Tangible transistors on printed circuit boards, that could be counted by eye.  Also semi console sized B&W TV's for $200 dollars, or $2,000 in today's bucks.   You can get a 55" 3-D flat screen for that dough.  We have come a long way.

Thanks for posting the entire Sunday Edition paper.

1917 storm...

http://bklyn.newspap.../image/55290005

Interesting note in the story about Malbone St. and this storm induced flood in the Brighton Line open cut, where 17 months later a 100 would die as a motorman hired as a strike breaker and unfamiliar with the sharp curve there---tried to negotiate it a 45mph, smashing the wooden car frames against the concrete of the open cut.
