Steve, do you think this earthquake might also be linked to one from a previous year? I was reading earlier where the last Chilean earthquake might have been linked to the one in 1960. This linkage of the same fault being affected has been traced back to the 1575 Valdivia earthquake.

Not beyond the realm of possibility. These megathrust faults are typically very long-the one off Indonesia is especially so. In a MM 8.5-9+ about 1000 km of the fault will be involved and actually shift but if your megathrust is 2 or 3000 km long then you have more of the fault that could become more stressed as the uplift or down thrust rearranges the stress patterns which may bring a section closer to failure-on the other hand it might actually lessen stress on other parts of the fault-this has actually been noted in CA especially after the 1989 and 1994 events. THEN there are the seismic gaps which is a big concern off the Mexican West Coast.

^Does that represent the energy of the tsunami? Pretty neat, looks like Chile could get hit pretty hard despite being very far away.

Basically how it's labeled; result of modeling. I believe the heights are open-ocean heights; the curve to the south is interesting.

Guam just reported 2.6 ft - outside the "beam" though.

CNN is reporting that entire islands might have been washed over in the pacific.

That comes from the International Red Cross, and it's completely wrong.

They told Gerard Fryer of the Pacific Tsunami Center that while interviewing him and he basically said it was nonsense; because they're surrounded by deep water, tsunamis have very little effect on coral atolls.

Japan just ordered a "nuclear emergency" as attempts to cool the northern plant are "not going as planned"

http://www.breakingnews.com/

sounds like at one of the plants, the emergency diesel generators failed to turn on and are not working. that's a very scary scenario for a nuke plant. If they are similar to the US plants, they should have battery backup that they can use as a backup to the failed diesels.
