There was an article in the watauga Democrat about it. I don't remember anything about the recession but we're down to 7 farms from 12 last year if I remember correctly.I'm hearing reports of a Christmas tree shortage this year. They say it is a result of the 2008 recession when fewer trees were planted by tree farmers. Trees planted around then are the ones being harvested this year. Some cut your own farms are reportedly not even opening this year. Have any of you mountain folk heard anything about this?

Little tiny flakes here just south of Boone. Hit a decent shower driving out of town earlier. Tynecastle area never thawed much today. Trees were gorgeous coming home.

Wound up with about a half inch of sleet and solid glaze of ZR. Hearing from friends in Eastern Ashe County that it was a lot worse there. Roads south/west of Boone were a little slushy at 530 this morning but not too bad. Few small limbs down here and there.

HRRR is mostly snow/sleet on the mountain. Looks like fun.

12z 3k NAM totals. Still looks pretty rough on the mountains even if you reduce those totals. Very brief change to rain in the worst areas near the end of the event but it shows more wraparound snow than previous runs now.

What's interesting is that the RGEM actually has 850's sub freezing for most of the mountains during the heart of the event which would probably keep it as sleet rather than freezing rain. Wish there were soundings available somewhere.

Winter storm watches out for the mountains. Let's get this winter started.

Keep in mind it has a tendency to overdo precip by quite a bit, especially in CAD events right along the escarpment.Yea especially along the 81 corridor up in VA. 3k nam clown map is just stupid lol trying to signify its intent on laying down some significant ice accretion.

Shows some decent ice accumulation before the changeover though. Still nice to have it washed away.
The 3K Nam shows a changeover to rain for basically everyone as the heaviest precip is rolling through.

12km NAM looking like a zr/ip event end to end.
Also the 6z fv3 says hold on tight with several chances.

Euro still advertising a wintery start with the second wave around some parts of WNC. Surface temps are below freezing as the precip begins. 850mb temps are warm but surface temps could support sleet for a couple of hours Thursday.
.
Yeah the 12z shows around 0.5-0.6"QPF falling with surface temps below freezing. Should be interesting through mid-morning. Temps start off in the low/mid-20's and never get above 36 in Boone during the event. Cold, cold rain.

Yeah looks like a NWF only event to me. Encouraging seeing these gulf systems so early on though.
12z icon with what I believe is a more realistic picture with maybe some passing snow showers on the 14th. Fun to track, but I'm not expecting much.

12z euro ensembles throwing a big hint about a potential storm around the 14th/15th.

Had a dusting on the cars at the house. Nice seeing white ridges on the way into work this morning.

Yeah rode up the Parkway on Beech and the grass had a nice coating.
Edit: crappy photo incoming.

3k NAM looks like a 33° and rain kinda day Friday. Very borderline for the higher elevations to see a wet snow. Guess we'll see how it plays out.

Yeah GFS took a big step toward snow around Boone and up. Could be fun.
Im thinking that exact spot wow snapped those pictures from will be a winter wonderland Fri into Sat. This looks very promising , espeacilly northern mtns 3500 to 4000 foot mark on up.

I was up on grandfather yesterday and it's certainly trying to look nice. Most NW facing slopes are bare and everything above 5kft for the most part is probably gonna be a dud. Below that there's still some hope.Is there any sign of a foliage season in the NC mountains or is it a complete dud? The reports I have seen sound pretty dismal.

GFS a few runs now with good NWF potential Sunday night. Saw a video of some flurries on Grandfather yesterday morning. Winter is coming quick.

7.3" storm total rain about 10 miles south of Boone. Models missed by a few inches IMBY.

3" on the nose today for a storm total of 7.3".

Too warm. Plenty of nwf rain right now though.
Any chance for NWFS behind this for the highest peaks? Seems like it would be a good time for it.
