  1. Thanks for catching that, Jag....Appreciate the help...what a sad little human being.
  2. I don't recall that one...but busts are a part of the biz especially with the modelling back then....the March 2001 disaster was the worst one I remember but that was north of the TN Valley. Stark memories for me on '93, though, I was actually working the extended desk as we called it at TWC back then and remember the debate among us about putting snow and mix all the way down to ATL 5 days out....we went for it. The storm was about as well forecast as anything we had ever seen back in the dark ages of meteorology (compared to today). I also remember coming in that Saturday about 4:30a and the rain was just changing over to snow...there was vivid lightning...When I got inside I heard one of my coworkers saying....its not going to happen here....I let him know it was changing over and by 7am we were buried in snow. It was also the only time in the 12 years I was there, that we were ever off the air....the power failed at 7:30 then the backup generator failed and took them about 15 mins to get it up and running. In all, we ended up with 10" of snow in NW Atlanta...it was closer to a foot up in Marietta where I lived. Fun times!
  3. So glad this panned out well for everyone. I went to Dayton with the family and spent the late morning and early afternoon at Monkey Town Brewing...those poor people had no idea what hit them....but they persevered and kept everyone's belly and mug full until showtime. I never knew the tree leaf shadow thing and got a pic of that but put the phone away for the spectacle. The cicadas were so loud I never heard crickets but we had the bats come out during totality....so cool. To me the end of the totality diamond ring was simply stunning. I would have to say that was the highlight....oh, and the dramatic cool down about 30 minutes before...I was surprised at how noticeable that was. Was a most excellent day!
  4. Just a 30 minute drive into the totality for me...wondering what traffic will be like....(hoping for a cloud free day!)
  5. The February 1994 ice storm in N MS, W TN and NW AL belongs in here for sure. Up to 6" of ice accumulation in northern MS from this one....can't even imagine! ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/special/iwais96.pdf
  6. Damn...guess it is time to pull the garlic...We are selling our house to downsize so the good garden stuff has to wait until next year...
  7. Just wanted to welcome you and apologize for not getting your prelim posts approved...I was on vacation and out of pocket for a while. You should be good to go now and we welcome your contributions to this great subforum!
  8. Just two out of about 25 or so...
  9. I thought you were supposed to harvest in late February or early March. Oops...
  10. My garlic was a massive fail...BTW...when I dug one up to look at it, it looked like a spring onion...it still smelled like garlic, at least.
  11. An excellent climo site provided by the NWS...you can get good info going back a number of years.... http://www.nws.noaa.gov/climate/xmacis.php?wfo=mrx
  12. I got my garlic in the ground about two weeks ago...My habanero plant is still producing...at least for another day or two. And I have two red bell peppers about ready to harvest....going down to the wire with those.
  13. I am looking forwarxd to growing my own garlic this year! It will be a first....
  14. Bumper crop of Habaneros coming in right now and there are still tons of Heirlooms on the vine ready to come out in the next week. Also getting some nice red bell peppers right now...first time I have grown them and am very pleased. Cucumbers are finished thought they did well...The herb side of things was an all out disaster...I think I had too much sunlight on them...will try a different spot for them next year.
  15. We will be happy to have you....we don't post as much as the other side of the Apps but things should pick up in the next month or so.
  16. Headed down that wat to Siesta Key in two weeks....home to the most amazing sunsets ever! This one of many spectacular pics I took in 2011....
  17. We harvested three Better Boys and two Heirlooms already...and the cherry tomatoes have been going crazy. Even have a few jalapenos out...
  18. Very first returns this week! Expecting to bring in a big tomato tomorrow!
  19. Just pulled our first two cucumbers and cherry tomato last night....The jalapenos are looking strong too...
  20. Thanks for all the recommendations! We are definitely starting slow...fortunately everything is doing very well right now. I would love to grow my own garlic...I use it in almost everything I cook. It is definitely on the list for next year. BTW, it does not hurt to have a good cat in the back yard...one of our cats is a noted bunny and bird killer, speaking of organic "pest"icides.
  21. Thanks for the offer, Stove...my yard guy left me a nice pile for free after I chatted with him the other day. You have a fantastic garden...if I had time, I would love a set up like that!
  22. The wife's B-Day is coming up and she loves to get books on things she is interested in so if anyone has a recommendation on a specific book on vegetable gardening in these parts, I would be most appreciative.
  23. That is awesome, Stovepipe! This the first year I have grown anything in a while...we have started out small. 3 tomato plants 4 pepper plants and a cucumber...we also have small barrels with basil and cilantro...I think my wife will really get the bug if we are successful but we kept it very small this year. Definitely goiing to get the mulch to help with weed control and soil moisture.
