Effing chipmunks are eating my tomatoes. Anybody have a good trick to repel them?

Used as a last resort as I hate killing things unnecessarily, especially in this semi-humane manner...5 gallon bucket 3/4 full of water, handfull of sunflower seeds on top.  piece of scrap wood 2x4 as a ramp.  Check for bodies 1-2x a day, refill with seeds as needed.

We managed 0.45" last night, Nothing like what fell in SME.

Managed to double my July/August to date total with 1.79" yesterday.  Needed it.  Not the 3-5" that fell in interior York but it's a dent in the Stein bucket nonetheless.

Just watched the whole radar loop since 6pm and it’s pretty impressive.  Love that stuff.  I don’t know how big one or two pixels are (a mile?) but rainfall does vary quite a bit locally on that product.  Big area of 2-4” pixels but narrow corridor of 5-7”. Probably never know for sure the max amount depending on station locations… but that’s a large footprint overall of heavy rain.

On that image you posted I am between Cape Elizabeth and Portland, that blue/green zone and I'm over 2".  Very efficient rainfall this evening.

So we are actually only spending about $800-$1000 dollars on propane a year, our system is pretty efficient as it’s a new house.

Is a heat pump basically just a type of mini split?

We're in the same boat.  Newer house, newer system, propane for 2400 sq, spend $1200 a year all-in on propane.  Even with the price we locked in at this year, we're looking at $1400 based on past usage.

Looked at heat pump system, did the analysis, would not be worth the investment for heating because we're so efficient.  The only reason we would have gone for it would have been for cooling.  Much more efficient than running window units.  My local climo/house isn't that demanding on cooling, though, so ultimately we didn't get them.

Well I just spent the last 30 minutes watering the garden and other certain things . Now I have to go across street and water neighbors stuff who is away. There’s been maybe 5 days all summer that hasn’t required me to water the garden . It all started with your damn Coc k in June . Now with less soil moisture than Death Valley. Days with dews in the mid 70’s delivers full sun and death. Thanks much

I would say the issue lies with your gadden/gardener, not the lack of precip.

No we get it, you use your lawn as a sense of self-worth and status symbol.  It’s very important that this non-native vegetation be in pristine shape all the time otherwise you are failing at life somehow. Lush green lawn desires started with George Washington.  It’s the American dream from when his yard and house was painted and shown prominently as the pillar of wealth.

    Absolutely nailed it.

I’ve got a couple on a handful of milkweed plants on the backside of my garage. I’m going to make a small area in the back yard next year that is all milkweed and wildflowers.

We have an area that borders the woods just outside the fence in this photo that's our milkweed area.  Similar to what @mreavesposted.

This year we planted Mexican Sunflowers in the box adjacent to that area and we've been flush with polinators including monarchs, bees, hummingbirds and something I didn't know existed:  hummingbird moths (second photo).

I highly recommend these sunflowers for any pollinator garden.

Makes me feel so helpless sometimes. We had at least 40 minutes lead time to Sebago, we were messaging it on NWSChat. There's not much more we could've done, but yet still feels like we could've done more.

For sure.  I am not undermining the awfulness of the tragedy... People have to use common sense.  Being in a car, sitting still, under 40ft white pines during a storm, no matter how severe, is not a good idea.  Maybe they couldn't go anywhere else.
