@DeltaT13 You know anything about trees? Looking to plant one in backyard. Was leaning towards dogwood/crapapple. Do crapapples attract lots of bees? I need the max height to be 15-20 ft.

I’ve got a crabapple tree in my yard. It would meet your height needs but it’s a useless tree to me. The apples are worthless and mine at least, has no aesthetic qualities to me. I’m actually planning to cut it down one of these weekends.
Plus I had these swarming last year when the apples were on they were mean looking guys…

Man, I will say without any hesitation that it is indeed cold as hell in the Chicago area for my liking.  I will concede that it is not forever lasting like perhaps Minneapolis, but I remember very vividly about 12 years ago when it was -30 one morning in Valpo and the entire week wasn't much better.  About 9 years ago I recall -23 and many burst pipes in a region that actually designs homes to withstand frosted pipes.  That is crazy cold, and I even did the "throw the boiling water into the air" trick with my kids :)

I personally like both snow season and summer.  Note that I didn't say winter because up where I live, we can get 3' or greater snowfall in mid-May and the next day hit 70 degrees.  Gotta love that!  But my personal favorite is Monsoon season and watching lightning filled anvils form over the plains.  It is an amazing sight from the perspective of my elevation.

Regarding Currier and Ives, we kind of have that.  However, it is highly subject to where your house is situated.  My house is on a south facing slope and snow melts very quickly due to the sun.  But literally my actual neighbor, 300' below me, is on the river and shaded by a mountain and he has had constant snow cover on his property since mid-December.  Even with temps around 50 it doesn't melt much until the sun hits it.  He'll be back in the sun sometime in March.

I was out in looking into woodland park and then up in Boulder in early September . While I was a bit disappointed in woodland park, we stayed just north of town up in some hills. On our last night, a storm rolled in to our south and it was amazing to watch it roll in over the mountains and seeing the lightning down in town. Also some strikes it seemed like we were actually above the clouds/lightning. Was really cool to watch that he or so.

Geico has been great for us. Best friend is an insurance broker and he can only match their rates but without all the bells and whistles geico offers.

So I priced out 6-7 of the big names online over the weekend and followed up the last couple days.
Unless something drastic changes I can’t see myself not going with geico now myself. They had the lowest auto by about 70 bucks/6 months but were a few hundred higher on my homeowners. I just got off the phone with the local geico in Batavia and he shaved another 30 off the auto and 250 off my homeowners. Using all the same criteria.
I expected at least a few hundred dollars increade updating my pickup from an 07 to a 22. It’s only going up 163 dollars.

I was getting pretty good numbers at State Farm and could get close to matching the auto but was going to have to sign up for their drive and safe which I wasn’t crazy about.

  4. So I’m going to be getting a new pickup here at some point (deposit down, now waiting for transport I guess)

Any of you guys deal with insurance or have any recommendations? I’ve used local small towns insurance til now but kinda considering going to a big name one. Geico, State Farm, etc…
I went with a new company last April and this guy is just to incompetent. He’s messed too many things up in 10 months that god forbid I make a claim I’m afraid I’ll not actually have coverage or something.

The worst visibility of the entire trip was actually in the Adirondacks where I almost went off the road. We were driving from lake placid up the mountain to jay peak and along the river we hit some crazy snowsqualls. Forward the video to 1 minute.

Been in that exact stretch before in very similar conditions in a semi. Only difference was I did in the day time… talk about a pucker factor…

  6. Got up about 10 minutes ago to decide if I want to bother with going to work. Maybe 1”/hr here currently.

Looking at Radar and all you guy’s reporting the 2-4” snow just to my south and moving north. Nah no thanks, no driving today . But what I did notice and I don’t recall who said it but the snow sounds crunchy/icey as it’s falling .

Wow in the couple minutes typing this things have exploded in the snowfall rate dept….

Part of the reason for heavy salt use on the roads is that people today almost insist on seeing bare pavement when they drive. People like to drive like its July 4 when it’s January 4. There are growing environmental concerns over the use of salt as it runs off into bodies of water. But, as I said, sand also ends up in drainage systems. Not only does it clog closed drainage systems it builds up in ditches requiring periodic cleaning out to ensure proper grade of the ditch line. Either way, we need to apply something to maintain the coefficient of friction on our roads when ice and snow covers the roads.

In addition to this a lot of salt is used perhaps more often than necessary because towns/countries/Dot budget X amount for salt. (just like anything else, no secret here)
Well say this yr is  a light winter they still keep spreading as much as possible so that there budget allotment stays the same. Then if the following year is twice as bad as normal there’s not as much of a deficit to overcome.

municipalities are also required by the state as I understand it, to  take X amount of salt no matter if they use it or not. I delivered some to places that had no where to go with it back in early December. I also do believe all salt orders go through the state in some form. Your local highway super has to “call”in to the state and then the order comes back to the mine.
Sand seems to be more popular in areas with any type of hills (obviously) and also areas with a smaller tax base.  Don’t quote me on these numbers but you can get say 400 ton of sand to one 40 ton load of salt. But all the comments on drains and whatnot I’m sure factor in as well.

As for environmental concerns there are more towns using a treated salt that sticks to the rds better and isnt suppose to runoff as much as regular. I also believe it reduces the temperature at which it’s effective to as this is pretty widely used up in the adks.

Someone with better knowledge of  all this will probably correct me, as I’m just a steering wheel holder who delivers a lot of the vehicle corrosion enhancer around the state. You’re all welcome….:D

It starts near the Thruway tonight and then shifts north. You're going to end up driving through it at some point. It will be strong in the morning.

Ohhh yea I figured, I get to drive in plenty of them I just try to plan to miss as much or the worst of a band whenever I can. I just wasn’t sure when the 3”+ was going to get rolling as I could get going a little sooner Hope to be back to Syracuse and westbound by 6-630 if at all possible .

     Thanks for the info!
