I’m trying friend / it has been SO long - just seeing all the reports when I woke up basically ringing our area and nothing here was disappointing. Just back from walking the dogs on the trail - my dream of walking them in a snowfall continues to wait - maybe this PM…

Glad I'm back in AA County. It never snowed in Carroll County lol. Woke up to a coating of white with white roads here. Flurries and 24 degrees.

I'm probably going off grid soon. When we get a snow event, I stop all watching radar, looking at forecast, coming here, ect. I like to enjoy it the natural way. I don't want to know if I'm going to dry slot, be in between bands, ect. I like to live in the moment and savor every minute of the event and take in the beauty with a clear mind. I don't want to be pissed 3 hours from the end of the storm because JI is trolling the Strom thread about the back edge lol

I still love snow, but it can also be an annoyance. Has zero impact on my happiness. I like to track because I appreciate the physics and complexity of the atmosphere. Large scale fluid mechanics is cool.

I'm more obsessed with the power of nature. I've always loved storm. I was 3 months old during the blizzard of 78. My mom told me that I cried if I couldn't see out of the window. She moved me to the window and I laid there starring out the window at the blizzard all day. During thunderstorms she'd come in the room and I'd be standing in my crib in the middle of the night looking at the window. When I was 6 I got busted outside at 2 am looking at the snow falling lol.

Bring the cold and dry :yikes:

I know it's bad when you start to Deb. You and I have similar climo here in the swamp zone. It's like living in north Georgia now.

Not sure how much rain I got, but it was a lot. Total swampy mess out there. Ugh.. winter lol. I can't wait to have frozen mud.

Maybe this is only true in my case, but...to me...I believe there's an addictive quality with this as well. I see what my brain does when we're tracking something. The shot of adrenaline on the Zs when there's potential (literally dropping everything to check the run), the dopamine of a good run, the opposite of a bad. There's a real give (and take) of the brain's reward system...and when there's a letdown, the mood is a bit disrupted (temporarily).

BUT...what I'm finding this season is...the less exposure to this place (and even tracking) when things are crappy works wonders. The site blocker app is becoming my best friend, lol

Not many here appreciate my psychological musings of this hobby, but I'm telling ya, folks...it's worth it to delve into that side to better manage your reaction to the not-so-good that can happen with this hobby.

This is not a hobby to most people here. It's a lifestyle. Most of us were born this way. I see it as a gift. We're gifted to have such a profound connection with nature that it affects our daily lives. I'm sure most of us have our little meltdowns here and move on happily with our day, but always looking at the sky.

  5. No storm?

    Cold smoke?

    Rain?

This is 4 days out and humans have 0 clue what's coming. Things haven't changed that much since I was a kid. I remember 35 years ago it was the same theme until the snow was on the ground. I remember Justin Berk on the news getting me pumped for failures lol

  6. 2016 sucked lol. We had 4 days of cold. A freak snow that melted 36 hours later with temps in the 60's. That was it for that winter. Sure.. better then the garbage lately, but hardly a good winter. 2014-15 was the last winter we had basically.

  7. It's water blowing off the building you're in lol. Not snow.

It's getting pretty impressive here. I stopped at Bacon Ridge in Crownsville at a high spot (185-200'). The wind was roaring across the highest treetops on the ridge tops. It was calm in the wetlands down below. The creeks are definitely starting to flood.

  8. Wind and rain are cranking here. I just drive down 450, towards Annopoils. The fresh water flooding is starting and the salt water flooding isn't far behind. I expect that road to be closed tonight. The South River is already starting to flood into the woods.

The criteria for closing schools has changed drastically over the decades. My mom told me in the 1960's school would be open with a foot of fresh snow on the ground. When I was in school in the 1990's, it took about 6 inches to close school. Today a squirrel farts wrong and schools close.

As to the reason why, my guess is heightened liability issues. Its just easier to make it up at the end of the year than opening yourself up to lawsuits.

President day 1987 I got stuck at school all night. No one cried. We ate square pizza slices and drank kool aid until the local red necks rescued us.

  10. I'm plotting my storm chase for this evening. I'm going to start out at Bacon Ridge. It's AA county's mountain range. Then I'll head to downtown Annopoils. From there I'm thinking Chesapeake Beach. I'll take back roads home from there. I just hope I'm not running weed plants into my house in pitch black due to power outages. I'm thinking about evacuating my plants from my greenhouse before the big gust.

School is closing because society is soft as f*ck. I remember trees falling on the kids at my bus stop. The ones that got missed dragged the kids that got hit onto the bus.

  11. Our best dead ratters usually feature flooding rain and ski resorts all up and down the coast closing in January. We're checking all the boxes. Hopefully that pattern change hits in April so we can stay in the 50's with rain all spring, too.

Another drought denter? We take.. My sativa crop is underwhelming to say the least.  Throw in some power flickers and what more do you need?

Send PM if you need advise. My indica and hybrids are in a greenhouse. They might be coming in the house to ride the storm out.
