UPDATE: finally found the suspected problem in my implementation (CDO stumbling over the Berkeley Earth time format).

Long story short: Berkeley Earth now looks consistent with ERA5, both showing about a 5 sigma event. Less dramatic, still impressive, and still a taste of 2100. pic.twitter.com/FNOJryU45p
