July 2025 Discussion-OBS - seasonable summer variability

We're also due for an absolutely miserable august. The last two have been easy. I think mid-late august we roast big time -

Perfect post! Its why so many dont post here anymore. Its so tiresome when posting FACTUAL data for MY area I get responses from people who dont live here posting unrelated graphs (always love the smoothed out random county average maps that come from some unknown "smoothing" and "quality control"). I discuss actual events/facts/trends for certain winters and then get a response with an unrelated chart of a mean temp. Happens every time. Its nauseating. Its like you have to stroke the climate change egos by mentioning it in EVERY SINGLE POST. And God forbid you post something about recent cold/snow and/or a warm/low snow winter of the past. Prepare for the wrath. I grew up with an interest in weather for my region. Not in a gridded anamoly for the earth. -

You’re off by 3. BOS has had 13 AOA 90. That’s probably above average for an entire summer -

Late July heat dome, 95+ every day, lows in the upper 70s across the city. -
Well, it had to rain JUST ENOUGH to make the roads wet. Grrr...

Interesting. Both 1916-17 & 1917-18 were cold winters here with slightly below avg snowfall. I'd bet anything it was a suppressed storm track with significant snow to my south. -

LI the warmest spot in the area with partly cloudy skies JFK continues with intra hour readings during the day - what a shame https://forecast.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KJFK.html -
That one dropped 14-15" in my backyard just 30 miles east of Central Park, 20" a 20 minute drive south/east of me and 24" at Islip about 50 miles east of Manhattan. If only it could've developed a hair sooner. That of course was the last good nor'easter for this area. Tons of crap SWFE events (although there was the one decent front end 4-6" event last winter here), cutters, suppressed garbage and every other type of disappointment since. This ferocious Pacific jet pattern is tailor made to ruin the winter chances for the northern Mid Atlantic. As long as that persists our odds at anything different are piss poor at best.

We got our first vivid lightning, with loud cracks of thunder, of the year this morning. There was very little wind, though, despite the warning. -
It’s gross outside. I biked the B&A trail and BWI loop and nothing is dry. It’s awful out.

I’m not confident I get anything in Greenfield either. A quick shower isn’t going to do anything for the vegetation at this point. -

YUCK! Currently 83.6/74.1 with a HI of 91, but might as well be 111 with all the moisture in the air, slaps you in the face as soon as the door to outside is opened. A cloudy/foggy start, but the sun poked out between 11 and noon and allowed temp to hit 85.2 before cloudy to partly cloudy returned. I'm sandwiched between lines forming right now at 2 pm. Looks like a good solid line is forming from Harrisonburg back SW to Beckley and another broken line from SE of Lexington VA down into the NC mountains towards Boone, all headed E or ESE at the moment. Amazing difference in rainfall across my county in past 10 days. There are places over 12 inches (with almost 6" falling in 2 hours!) and some right at an inch, although Alleghany is not a huge county (but strangely shaped like the state of WV, which borders us). Keeping an eye on the sky, stay safe out there today folks!

Just a terrible summer..hard to enjoy...every weekend but 4th of July was cloudy -
I finished this morning's MCS with 0.93" of rain. As it moved in, it looked like a lot more would fall. We did get our best lightning and thunder of the year, by far, but the warm advection band weakened as it moved through and then the second line crapped out, too. We had a flash flood warning and a severe storm warning, but neither came close to verifying. Models are showing another MCS Sunday morning.
