  1. Past hour
  2. Storm total - 4.7" Measured 4.3" around 5:45 and an additional 0.3-0.4" since then. Snow depth is between 4 and 5 inches depending on where I measure, maybe a bit more in the grass. What a wonderful snow day.
  3. I’m inclined to believe the GFS and euro over the cams. Seems like they’ve been better this winter. Could be a solid storm for us if the rain/snow line sets up just south of the metro. .
  4. This was the vibe: I really, genuinely hope you all get this type of event this month. Also, we can get back to our specialty down here - sleet and freezing rain
  5. Looks like it is now rotting out but ended up with 0.3 or so here.
  6. I've had a 7" and a 6" sleet storm. That stuff stayed around FOREVER!
  7. Paste bomb. Prettiest snows by far
  8. Yup. Stars out, dead still, and down to -0.6° already. Bit chilly for early December.
  9. This was in the middle of the night when everyone lost power. My Cannon Rebel is balls.
  10. Thanks! We just got our lights hung in time for the snows.
  11. How the fook do you commit two turnovers on THE SAME PLAY??? Jeebus this team is hot garbage!
  12. Wow no kidding! Nearly a foot for the valley lol.
  13. I'm surprised that no one responded from the field. More than likely, it's because they also don't know. Here's a link to the Occupational Outlook Handbook (forecast slower than average growth in meteorologists/atmospheric scientists): https://www.bls.gov/ooh/life-physical-and-social-science/atmospheric-scientists-including-meteorologists.htm#tab-6 Although the link was updated in August, it does not appear to fully encompass the role of AI. That's probably because a lot is not yet certain. But if evidence from early inroads by AI in such fields as accounting, computer science, etc., is representative, AI could reshape the profession, shifting it away from forecast production to risk interpretation/impact communication. Basic forecasting, which is algorithmic in nature, could become far more automated than it is today. The meteorology profession will likely shift the human focus to areas that can't easily be replicated by algorithms or machine learning. At the same time, meteorologists will likely need additional skills in areas of machine learning, data science, and AI training due to their much greater exposure to AI/AI-related tools. Depending on when your son might pursue a degree, the curriculum could differ from what it is today. Prospective colleges/universities can provide greater insight.
  14. The Varina COOP observer updated their total as of 8pm to 3.5" and there could be another tenth or two added based on the radar trends. Looks like they may be using that observer for the Richmond airport, @JB Fins.
  15. It’s a good thing we do complex so well
  16. Beautiful home! Snow changes everything especially with Christmas decorations up.
  17. Wasn’t expecting much this evening but that narrow band delivered. Picked up a quick inch at my house. No idea what to expect tomorrow. The hi-res models are way north, but none of them handled what happened today well. The EC-AIFS has been steadfast on nailing the metro for days and the other globals caved that way. It’s done well in this pattern so there’s that to consider too.
  18. Regardless of the other indicies, the -AO is always the savior for us. Many times over, when it dips down good things always happen around here. Pattern suppression for the win.
  19. It’s the trade off to like an unnecessary cool 42F night in the summer, while south of the Pike is enjoying 60 dews.
  20. Lost power for a few hours, still 6 inches at 30.9. Still, this is the biggest surprise storm since 12/26/2004.
  21. thinking 1 to 3 between tomorrow night and Wednesday afternoon
