  1. Past hour
  2. Fortunate indeed! I remember walking through the neighborhood and just listening to the wind how as very fine snow was falling. Fun evening.
  3. Assuming my general idea is right: Cold eventually retrogrades to the West, you should see ice storms, blizzards, and tornadoes (probably in that order) in the Southern Plains later in the winter. If you're convinced Chuck is right, you had a several nasty ice storms in 1989-1990, as well as in late 2005 in December. There was a warm up I believe in 2013-14 too, with a pretty nasty ice storm in SE Canada at some point in December - don't really remember when. We did have pretty extensive cold waves at times in Dec 2013 like we're seeing now. But with the even more expansive coverage, you had an almost immediate snap pack to a thaw/warm pattern the following week. This was the height of the Dec 2013 cold snap locally - 2013-12-05 39 19 29.0 -8.8 36 0 0.35 3.5 3 2013-12-06 37 11 24.0 -13.6 41 0 0.00 0.0 2 2013-12-07 33 18 25.5 -11.8 39 0 0.00 0.0 1 2013-12-08 38 18 28.0 -9.1 37 0 0.01 0.5 1 2013-12-09 33 9 21.0 -15.9 44 0 0.00 0.0 0 2013-12-10 34 10 22.0 -14.7 43 0 0.00 0.0 0 2013-12-11 44 13 28.5 -8.0 36 0 0.00 0.0 0 2013-12-12 41 19 30.0 -6.3 35 0 0.00 0.0 0
  4. I have shrubs that finally recovered this season!!! They got absolutely scorched.
  5. It’s like 5mph there. You live in the thermal belt.
  6. I’m praying my car’s battery also finds it fake tonight. It struggled the other day and took a couple tries to turn over. Only 3 years old so might need to get that looked at.
  7. A foot of sleet would be pretty cool. Freezing rain, no thanks.
  8. Yep, I seem to be in the 'sweet spot', at least for now, lol. It is still lightly snowing with 10dbz returns overhead? Amazing.
  9. Giggity I mean good Lord if you watch the track that's ice on ice on snow on snow.
  10. Assuming the NHL has some private meteorologists, I’m sure they have their fingers crossed looking at this and are rooting for a GFS like solution for New Years. Who schedules outdoor hockey games in southern Florida? Idk if it’s January.
  11. Thats great! Hoping that narrow band sags a little farther south. Glad you got to see some flakes. That's twice this year. Hoping for that big dawg soon!
  12. Least favorite type of weather here, cold rain falling on snow and slowly turning it to slush. About 5" of snow on ground yesterday is now basically 3" of gloop. Not so bad above 4,000' so far, ski resort slopes are mostly up higher than that. Around 37 F at my elevation, mid-40s and mostly bare ground lower down in Columbia valley.
  13. Can't remember the last time it snowed this many hours in a row at rva. pushing 5" still snowing 8" so far for the month, shades of Dec. 1989
  14. vs 58" two counties west - yeah ouch. Marshall came back with some great months for me during my 19 yrs there but missed the biggest one by 17 mos moving there in May of '02.
  15. Just listening to the deck and trees pop and crack this evening.
  16. Stations here are running in the -9 to -10°F plus so far this month, Not fake.
  17. Yeah even N ORH county might get some rain....or at least very wet snow that prob isn't really sticking well. Might go an inch or two of paste there as the onset looks marginally cold enough. The system itself inst very impressive. Hard to get excited when you have the midlevel center NW of Ottawa....you're trying to get moisture advection on a dry wind direction. Western slopes might do a little better in that type of setup. Someone like @wxmanmitch(Mitch in S VT) will prob get like 8-10" while 10 miles east gets a sloppy inch with some drops mixed in late.
  18. 14° here. No wind. Sitting outside with no hat or gloves and it feels comfortable. If anything, I think wind chill factor is underrated.
  19. Super localized cold pockets being noted around town. Cars have been picking up -12 to -18 readings this evening in low lying spots. Big jumps in short distances. Another friend saw -16F less than an hour ago.
  20. A few years ago, I *finally* sat down and watched "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye and the running theme was that when the pair fled Miami by train with a pair of performing sisters to go help out a former WW2 C.O. with his ski lodge in Vermont, when they arrived, they thought they got off at the wrong stop - guessing North Carolina - because there was no snow! And it was just a few weeks before Christmas. The money shot scene was when Bing's character saunters up to the lodge's hotel clerk and asked "What did you do with the snow?" and the response "Oh we take it in for the night". The movie released in 1954. I have my snowfall obs from MBY going back to around when I joined Eastern Wx in 2006/2007, and through when they changed to the current American Wx, and there were 4 IMBY (and 5 if you count 2018 - 2019) - Snow/sleetfall 2024 - 2025 season = 12.56" | Snow/sleetfall 2023 - 2024 season = 14.04" | Snow/sleetfall 2022 - 2023 season = 1.20" | Snow/sleetfall 2021 - 2022 season = 15.62" | Snow/sleetfall 2020 - 2021 season = 31.31" | Snow/sleetfall 2019 - 2020 season = 2.47" | Snow/sleetfall 2018 - 2019 season = 19.26" I used to watch Emergency! And I did used to religiously watch the Carol Burnett show and even remember seeing that famous "Went with the Wind" skit when it first aired. One show that only aired a season back then, was "The Magician" with Bill Bixby (was a fan of his). And of course stuff like "Welcome Back Kotter" and a bunch of the CBS shows like "All in the Family", etc. And every Labor Day, I used to try to stay up late to watch the various acts on the Jerry Lewis telethon. Those were the days. I actually hit my "high" for the day of 35 around 3:30 am this morning. Had been up and could tell from my weather station console, when the arctic front came through, and where the dewpoint crashed to as low as "0F" sometime today. My 2020 - 2021 seasonal was 31", and that was probably from a series of storms (all the threads are still here for those storms by the way). Am currently at my "low" for the day of 25 with dp a somewhat better "1.9F".
  21. Still getting light accumulating snow here, we're probably up to four and a quarter at this point in forest, Virginia
