OKX radar upgrading to dual-polarization

Recommended Posts

The upgrade will begin on January 16th, 2012. The radar site is expected to be down for two weeks. "Dual-polarization helps the radar better distinguish what types of precipitation it scans, which will enhance the accuracy of our forecasts and warnings. All National Weather Service radars around the country will be upgraded with this technology over the next two years."

An interesting conversation is occurring on the GRLevelX forums about the initial usefulness of dual-pol in terms of actually determining type of precipitation.

maybe this would help the weathertap radar.... man, the precip types weren't even close for the October storm.. but I realize those were unusual circumstances... I like weathertap's radars, but using it for precip type generally doesn't work very well, in my experience.

Part of this has to do with the elevation of the radar beam. At the end of the day, nearby surface reports are going to be the best ground truth.

You can use the Newark/JFK TDWR and the Boston, Albany, and Mount Holly radars to get decent idea as to what's transpiring.

Unfortunately being about 15 miles NE of Bridgeport puts me at the outer limit of the other regular radars and out of the range of the TDWR's. They'll be O.K. for an idea like you say but they are usually not as accurate here.

Finally, something I know something about! I'm more than excited for this.

Unfortunately, the dual-pol data is primarily proprietary right now and won't be available on the NWS site (yet). Besides the GRLevelX plugin, the only way for most of us to view the dual-pol variables will be through the Radarscope App on our mobile devices.

Link? I don't know why it wouldn't immediately be useful...

It is on the owners forum under 'Severe Storms' >> '2011-11-28: Winter Weather overnight in AL/GA?'

...DUAL POLARIZATION UPGRADE WILL NOW BEGIN ON FRIDAY JANUARY 13...
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADARS ARE RECEIVING A MAJOR SOFTWARE AND
HARDWARE UPGRADE CALLED DUAL POLARIZATION TECHNOLOGY.
CURRENTLY...RADARS COLLECT DATA ON ONLY THE HORIZONTAL COMPONENT OF
WEATHER AND NON WEATHER TARGETS. DUAL POL TECHNOLOGY WILL PROVIDE
RADARS WITH THE CAPABILITY TO ALSO SAMPLE THE VERTICAL COMPONENT OF
WEATHER AND NON WEATHER TARGETS. THIS UPGRADE WILL RESULT IN
IMPROVEMENTS TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR PRODUCT SUITE
THAT WILL ENHANCE PROTECTION OF LIVES...PROPERTY AND THE ECONOMY
THROUGH IMPROVED WARNING OPERATIONS.
THIS MAJOR UPGRADE WAS ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR AT UPTON NEW YORK DURING THE MORNING
OF JANUARY 16...HOWEVER...TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BENIGN WEATHER
EXPECTED THIS WEEKEND...THE START OF THE UPGRADE HAS BEEN MOVED UP
TO FRIDAY JANUARY 13. THE DOPPLER RADAR WILL BE UNAVAILABLE FOR 2
WEEKS AND IS SCHEDULED TO RETURN TO SERVICE BY JANUARY 29.
THIS UPGRADE IS PART OF A NATIONAL DEPLOYMENT THAT BEGAN EARLIER
THIS YEAR AND IS SCHEDULED TO LAST THROUGH 2013.
DURING THIS OUTAGE...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR COVERAGE
FOR OUR LOCAL SERVICE AREA WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE FROM SURROUNDING

Looks like OKX is dual-polled! I just looked at weatherscope on my android and the Dual Pol products are available now.

Hydrometeor Classification.... Looks like its indicating clutter as you would expect.

yup, but i dont think it will be back up on the nws site for a few more weeks as they will be testing it probably

good to know we have it though on our smart phones, i hate the mt holly radar for north of nyc

I think the regular radar data is back up. You wont be seeing dual pol on any NWS site for awhile, just from other venders who pay for the data.

Regular has been back up since yesterday evening when I noticed on Weathertap and from Allisonhouse on GRLevel3 images were coming in from OKX. If you are seeing Dual Pol images it's safe to assume the upgrade is complete ahead of schedule.

Your still getting paid data on weathertap even for the regular radar because its not up on NWS. Basically if you have weathertap, everything looks like it usually does.

Here's direct link from NWS for OKX:

Guess the web admins have to change some code on the OKX website since the radar is working on NWS.
