Staten Island snowfall...

1951-52 to 1972-73 observations come from the Westerleigh area of Staten Island...Cheves Ave and Marble St...From 1973-74 the observations come from the Travis area which is 3-4 miles SW of the Westerleigh location...Thanks to DonCat who does the Travis obs and has a weather station there......the 1960's is the snowiest decade...the 2010's are averaging a head of the 1960's after five years...

Uncle W, you are a treasure trove of info. I wanted to make some questions and comments by decade.

1950s: Decade of the dusting. Early 1950s winters had no months below normal. 57-58 was an incredible backended winter, however. We had 80" with 16" in February blizzard and exceptional 18" March storm, which had a smaller twin. It looks as if you had more in Dec on Staten Is but we had more in Feb and Mar.

We also have a house in extremw Northeast PA, where the Kocin maps show 30"+ for the Feb storm and similar totals in March. Do you have seasonal snowfall totals and max depth for Mt Pocono or another station in elevated Northeast PA? Would love to know more...I bet Wayne County had 120" season with 4' depths.

1960s: Contrary to popular belief, 60-61 is the snowiest winter recorded in Southern Westchester with 90", just ahead of the better remembered 95-96 season with 82". We just missed having 3 18+" storms that year. Do you remember 60-61? What were your totals in the three main storms?

Did you have a major snowfall in Jan 1965?

66-67 had an incredible Feb/Mar. For you to record 20" in both is remarkable. I know NNJ had depths over 40" that March. What was your biggest storm and max depth? Did you record accumulation in late April? We had 0.2" on 4/24/67 and a T on 4/27/67, record latest accumulation and second latest trace. It snowed in late May 67 in the White Mountains.

1970s:

Do you think it's possible for NYC to have a snowless winter based on the 2.8" in 72-73 and warmer climate now? We had about 11" that season in Westchester, much more than you, though the area narrowly missed a southern storm in Feb 73..

What were your totals for Feb 78 blizzard and Feb 79 PDI? Both events were lighter in Dobbs than other areas. Don't you think Jan and Mar 78 were underappreciated? Both were very wintry months.

78-79 was the coldest winter in the CONUS in modern records.

1980s: Not much snow, so let's talk cold. What was your low in the XMAS 1980 outbreak? What were your dailies in the Jan 85 arctic shot? Did you have single digit highs? I think Dobbs Ferry had a high of 8.

January 1987 was probably the best month of the 80s, but I believe 86-87/87-88 were better in the mid Atlantic. SNE also had a huge month in Jan 87. We may have similiarities to 87-88 this winter with a strong El Nino following a weaker warm ENSO event.

Do you remember the cold in Dec 1989?

1990s:

Really a poor decade for snow despite two great seasons.

What was your low temperature on the day that NYC hit 0F in Jan 1994?

Do you have any info for the Poconos/NE PA that winter? I know we had at least 3 ft on the ground in Lake Como in Mar 1994, remember building snow forts. Does Mt Pocono have seasonal snowfall and max depth records?

95-96, as we know, had snow in every month Nov to April. How much did you get in the blizzard? Did you get any extreme cold in the Feb 96 outbreak that hit the Midwest hard.

Did the March 98 event on the equinox miss you? I know Central Park had 5". Were you mostly rain due to being too far south?

2000s: Loved this decade. 02-03 had over 50" on Staten Island, but did you guys miss the XMAS storm or stay rain? We had 11" in southern Westchester. PDII was 16" here, did you have a similar total?

I remember Jan 2003 had a lot of underappreciated cold. How much did you get in April 7 2003?

What was your total in Feb 2006? Did you miss the mega band?

How much did you get in the Snowicane of 2/25/10? We had 26" that storm. February 10 was incredible here...had 13" 2/10, 7" 2/16, 26" 2/25, and one other snowfall. Total was 48" for the month, snowiest Feb ever..you had 38.1", the same.

2010s: Boxing Day 2010 sort of missed us with 13", but I assume you had 20+" like Central Park.

What was your max depth in January 2011, February 2014, and March 2015?

We had 25" depth in late Jan 2011, then an ice storm, winter total was 69.5", actually more than 09-10. I measured 30" snow depth at 400' elevation in a forested area in late Feb 2014. That was the deepest pack for Dobbs Ferry since 1961.

Been a great run. Love to pick your brain.

I was 11 going on 12 in 1960-61...The December 1960 storm was 15.2" in Central Park...with a 15" snow depth the next morning it makes me think the measurement came when the snow stopped...16.6" fell in Bensonhurst Brooklyn...this storm came on Sunday afternoon to Monday morning...Friday the 16th has a little wet snow and rain but a plane crash in Brooklyn was the big news of that day...Monday the 19th had an inch or so of snow...A rain storm around the 21st and quick freeze kept the snow cover alive...Flurries on Christmas eve then a warm up...snow on the morning of the 29th with rain in the afternoon...this storm ended with a dusting around midnight...News Years Day was rainy with a forecast to change to snow...It never did but I was watching for the change that never came...the first two weeks of January 1961 were benign...On Sunday January 15th it was cloudy with the temperature around 50...It started raining late morning as I remember and turned quickly to sleet in the afternoon and accumulated...snow mixed in late in the day and continued into the early morning hours of the 16th...the next two days were moderate and most of the snow melted...January 19th saw an arctic front pass and stall while a storm from the SW rode the front...A true blizzard started in the afternoon and ended the morning of the 20th...temps were in the single digits after the storm ended...strong winds created huge drifts...Monday and Tuesday the 23rd-24th had light snow events...Thursday the 26th had 3.8" from a storm that went out to sea to fast...very cold weather continued...very little snow melted...rumors of storms started the end of January..February 3rd started with single digits...very light snow was seen in the afternoon...Heavy snow started around dusk and was 8-9" deep by midnight...In the early hours of the 4th the snow changed to rain and sleet with temperatures rising above freezing for the first time in 16 days...the sleet was heavy and drifted in the strong winds...during the morning the mix turned back to snow and another 10" accumulated...all in all there was 28" on the ground in Brooklyn...near 40" in Port Jervis NY...after the storm temperatures moderated and snow started to melt...There was other storms the week that either missed the area or gave us a dusting...The a huge thaw the last ten days of February and the first week in March...60's and even 70 in early March melted all the snow...the rest of the month had at least three major storms with snow at the beginning but mostly rain...April was more of the same and even late May had a very cold rainy day with some ice pellets recorded at LGA...

Did you have a major snowfall in Jan 1965?

the winter of 1964-65 was the first one since 1958 with no snow on the ground for Christmas...a 3" snowfall on the 19th melted before Christmas day...there was a storm the first week that was mostly rain but ended as snow...a dusting to an inch accumulated in the city...The rain was supposed to change to snow earlier but remained as rain and sleet most of the night...that was a night of street light watching for the change that came to late...Christmas day and the two days after was a total torch...three straight days in the 60's...After that it got colder for the end of December...January had snowfalls the first four weekends of the month...The first on the 2nd-3rd was light snow mixing at times with sleet and freezing drizzle...almost an inch fell...Saturday January 9th was mild and damp...it was 55 degrees...warmest for the month...Sunday the 10th saw a snowstorm...6-10" when a cold front passed and a storm rode up the coast...it wasn't forecast the day before...Friday January 15th had a heavy snow warning for Saturday...I remember late Saturday night seeing the Moon thru clouds and snow flurries...The next day we did get a semi blizzard but only 5" fell...On Saturday morning the 23rd, rain developed with temperatures in the 40's...Temps quickly dropped and the rain changed to sleet and stayed as sleet with some freezing rain and some snow flakes mixed in...3-4" of sleet accumulated and it ended as freezing rain on the 24th...The 31st was cold with a storm forecast to give us more snow stayed south of the area...

Uncle, do you have any Poconos/NE PA records for February/March 1958 or the 93-94 winter?

Also, what are your coldest dailies from Staten Island? Jan 1985?

no but you can get the dailies from Port Jervis or Scranton from the Utah climate Center...I know from an old almanac Port jervis got 88" in 1960-61 and 101" in 1966-67...

Totally agree about unc!

Some comments about 50s and 60s (not much happened 1970 thru when I moved to Maine in Jan 1973.)

--3/18-19/56 gave us 24" of low 20s powder, but I've no memory of the smaller but still significant snowfall 2 days earlier.  We also had the 12" "sticky snow" during the April 7-8 overnight, which managed to break/bend some of the trees that had survived the Jan 1953 ice storm.

--57-58 was mild but had the Feb blizzard (15-18" at my NNJ home) and 24" on 3/21-22 at temps 30-32.  That latter event dropped 28" at Oak Ridge Reservoir, 9 miles to my west.

--The March 1960 storm dumped 18" with temps in the teens, which I thought at the time was quite cold for big snow. There was 6-7" OG as we entered the buses for a noontime school closing.  The 13.7" snow in Central Park in 12/59 was a relative non-event farther west.

--My NNJ records are gone, but 60-61 and 66-67 each topped 100", with the earlier season probably ahead by a couple inches.  12/12-13/60  brought about 18" of low teens powder for the opener of the NJ firearms deer season.

On Jan 15 my dad and I spent the Sunday icefishing in zr (1/4" or so accretion) then had 6" overnight.  I was quite surprised that we had school the next day, though given what happened soon after showed that to have been a good call.

The Jan 19-20 storm began with -SN during late morn.  Walking home from the bus stop, a friend and I helped push a neighbor's car up a hill, and I wondered at how quickly my hands became numb.  Got home and saw the temp was 9, at the time the coldest I'd ever seen accumulating snow.  We finished that event with 20", then got 3-4" from the one that fringed us a week later.

Feb. 2 saw a -14, tied (with 2/8/63) for the coldest I ever saw in NNJ.   The morning of the 4th was wild, +SN with ++wind, but almost comfortably warm after the stretch of days in the singles and teens.  We had at least 24" and the pack grew to 40-45".  The "three reservoirs", located 5 to 11 miles to our west, had 47, 50, and 52".  Oak Ridge (the 50) had reached 41" in Jan 1948 - got 34" from the 12/47 dump - but the other two never topped 36".  (And the best they could do in 66-67 was low 20s; the mild Jan and some Feb/Mar thaws held the pack down.  I've no idea what NNJ stations, if any, approached a 40" pack that winter.)

The closer for that season was a 12" surprise on 3/23, most of which fell 8A-noon.  It's the only time I walked the entire 5 miles home from our HS; no buses to our area showed up, so a bunch of us set out on foot.

--No big storms in 1965, but a nice 15-18" powder dump in Jan 64 plus a 10" event in late Feb.

--The Jan 29-30 blizzard is my only experience with snow in the city - Baltimore, while I was at Hopkins.  15-18" there with teens and winds gusting 50+.  Only 2 north-south streets were open that Sunday (30th) and I barely was able to reach the train station on 2/3 for a trip home at semester break.  when I got back (2/8?), many side streets still had not been plowed.

--66-67 featured just over 30" in 3 different months, Dec, Feb, Mar, and only 2" in Jan.  The highlight for me was the 12/24 thundersnow, along with about 15".  The Feb 7 storm was 13-15" of powder so cold (it was 4-5F at storm's height) that it wouldn't pack at all under the tires of my dad's 4500-lb Pontiac.  My younger brother and I were unable to push enough to get that beast up the small hill by our home.  The other most noteworthy events were the mega-clipper on 3/17, 6" in 6 hr as the temp slid from 13 to 8, and the even more frigid temps the next day when our temp got all the way up to 12.  I believe the NYC max of 20 marks the latest in the season in which the temp never topped 20.

--The Lindsay storm caught our scout troop (I was an asst scoutmaster) at Allamuchy Scout Camp, about 30 miles from home.  However, my 1962 Beetle had no problems during the drive home that Sunday morning.  Next day the carpenters for whom I worked tried to access a house they were building up a long hill, but we were blocked by a 6-foot drift across the road and more beyond.  Then I walked to the causeway between the two larger ponds in our community, and there visibility was about 100' and snow had drifted 10'+ where it blew off the upwind pond into the dropoff between the two.  (For good reason, the "Dam Road" was never plowed.)

That 13-yr period, 3/56 thru 2/69, gave us the 3 two-footers plus eight more storms 15-20" and 4-5 more 10-15".  That's about as many events 15"+ as I've had in the Maine foothills halfway thru my 18th winter here, despite the avg seasonal snowfall being more than twice as great here.

I remember a little about the first storm in March 1956...It was the thunder I remember hearing that scared me...The next day I remember playing in the snow...I remember playing in the second storm as it started and being home from school the next day...
