Winter 2014-2015 was topsy-turvy for western North Carolina and southwest Virginia, with a fast and cold start highlighted by a very chilly November. A subsequent flip in the weather pattern brought an unseasonably mild December. January returned to near-normal temperatures for the month, followed by a top-ten coldest February for the entire region. Notable cold waves during the winter occurred during January 7-8and February 18-20, with sub-zero low temperatures in the mountains and single digits elsewhere. For the core winter months (December-February), temperatures averaged about a degree below normal.

Seasonal snowfall was near normal across the Foothills and parts of the southwest NC mountains, but mostly below below normal across the High Country. Selected seasonal accumulations included 28 inches in Boone, 27 in West Jefferson, 13 inches at the Asheville Regional Airport, 12 inches in Marion, 11 inches in Waynesville, 10 inches in North Wilkesboro, and 7 inches in the Lenoir-Hickory area. On the mountaintops, Beech Mountain had 69 inches and Mount Mitchell had 88 inches. Seasonally, winter was rather dry, with the area averaging a few inches below normal in total precipitation.
