Hmm. I definitely saw a 22 this morning but that might have been on weather.com when I tried to plan taking a client to lunch based on when it was warmest on the hourly forecast.

For days the forecast was for mid to upper teens for highs on Friday. I'm not surprised it made it to 20 because the sun gets stronger in mid Feb. 21 at Somerville right now.  Hard to stay in the teens this late in winter.

Yeah true. Maybe the winter will be bookended by warmth

That would be ideal. Let's bang out couple more storms this month and early march then let's torch. Last march sucked and pushed my landscape design business back weeks.

Cold wasn't bad at all in manhattan this afternoon. I was expecting much worse. And I agree about the sun this time of year making a high in the teen hard. It's needs to be cloudy

They use words I have not seen noted ever in the entire AFD. I plan to call them later, little nervous. They mention losing power, have heat, trees coming down and possible death. Time period Later today into Monday. Don't get caught outside or you will likely freeze to death.

Nervous

It's all good. Feb 1934 workers building jones beach were stuck on ice flows for a week.

Epic yes but worse has happened

I don't go down to the water much; but I would figure all the LI Sound harbors are frozen solid and there is quite a bit of ice floating in the Sound.  I also would figure the Great South Bay has frozen over.

That`s insane .  You usually see this stuff  during Hurricane prep .

SUNDAY...LIFE THREATENING DAY IF YOU`RE IN THE WRONG SPOT (UNDER

TREES, OR STALLED ON A RURAL ROAD AT NIGHT) AT THE WRONG TIME AND

PROPER PRECAUTIONS HAVE NOT BEEN TAKEN. SOME PREPARATION CONCERNS

ARE NOTED IN THE FOLLOWING PGHS.

HAVE WORKING FLASHLIGHTS HANDY, CELL PHONES FULLY CHARGED BY 7 PM

THIS EVENING AND CANDLES ARE NOT RECOMMENDED IF POWER GOES OUT

(CANDLES ARE A FIRE HAZARD. STRONG WIND, SLIPPERY FOOTING AND

THE INCOMING VERY COLD AIRMASS WILL COMPOUND SAFE QUICK CONTAINMENT).

BEING PRESIDENT`S DAY WEEKEND, AN EXTENDED WEEKEND WHEN SCHOOLS OR

PLACES OF BUSINESS MAY NOT BE STAFFED ON MONDAY, VACANT BUILDINGS

SHOULD HAVE THEIR FUEL SOURCES CHECKED AND HEAT TURNED UP THIS WEEK

TO MITIGATE AGAINST THE POTENTIALLY PROBLEM OF FROZEN WATER PIPES/

DRAINAGES.

MUCH EXTRA CARE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR CHILDREN, THE ELDERLY AND

PETS. CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE AND ANTIFREEZE LEVELS IN YOUR VEHICLE.

CHECK YOUR BATTERY SO YOU DON`T GET STRANDED. INSULATE THOSE PIPES,

AT YOUR RESIDENCE, SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE COLD AND FREEZING. LEARN OR

REFRESH YOUR MEMORY ON HOW TO SHUT OFF WATER VALVES IN CASE PIPES DO

BURST. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY WHEN IT COMES TO SECONDARY HEAT

SOURCES TO AVOID CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING.

Yeah, we should see a steady increase in the ice coverage coming up.

When your cold outbreak may compare to the one 81 years ago , I think that`s pretty EPIC .

Personally i am excited for it. We haven't seen the western bays frozen completely since 1994. I vividly remember my dad taking me to see it. The great South Bay freezes more frequently. 2004 saw that happen but it's bigger and shallower with less water movement. The western bays are deeper with more water movement under bridges and what not. So it does take epic cold to freeze that.

I remember reading somewhere that during the 1700s little ice age that the ocean froze south of Long Island. Now that's epic

Cape May, February 1899:

"The edge of the ocean is a mass of ice as far as the eye can see"...was the quote from the State Gazette after the Great Blizzard of 1899...which put down a record 34 inches at Cape May, NJ and featured possibly the greatest arctic outbreak ever seen in the eastern US.
