First 2 Years In A Row Of Jan/Feb NYC Cold Since 1970

The long range guidance agrees that NYC below normal temperature departures will

continue from January into February. If the current  model forecasts are

correct, then it would be the first 2 years in a row that NYC recorded below normal

temperature departures for January and February since 1970. Several years since

then featured 3 out of the 4 two year January and February months with below normal

temperature departures.

Wow that is interesting...you would think that would have happened more often...My records go back to the late 70's and I couldn't find any consecutive years either.

I was thinking the same thing until I looked up all the individual monthy departures.

if February averages 32.0 or lower it would be the first time two consecutive years had a January and february average less than 32.0...1941-42 was the last time that happened...

Interesting stat. Getting the strong blocking on the Pacific side really made the difference for cold the last two

winters.

January and February 1979? Looked at Wunderground and not sure if January 1979 was below, above or at normal. Certainly February 1979 was frigid.

NYC would have had 2 years in a row had January 1979 not finished above normal.
