The East River between Rikers Island and Harts Island entirely froze over in January 1871, but as a January thaw started to take the sting out of the cold and melt snow from city rooftops, street urchins with unconscionable mischief began flinging slush balls at drivers and others who could not pursue them.

Speaking of the Times...I had a brief stint as a sportswriter for them during the 1930's.  Though new to the business, Maureen Dowd was kind enough to show me the ropes...
