There will be annular solar eclipse on May 20. Although the annular path doesn't affect this subforum, everyone here will have an opportunity to see a partial eclipse provided the weather cooperates. The standout solar eclipse event for me was the May 1994 annular event. This one won't cover as much of the sun but will occur near sunset unlike the 1994 event. A partial sunset eclipse looks something like this:

If my understanding is correct, the best viewing (maximum percentage of sun obscured) will be along/west of that green line. It seems areas east of there don't achieve maximum eclipse until after sunset.

According to that map, maximum eclipse at LAF occurs at 9:21 PM. Sunset is 9:03 so will miss out on the peak but there will be a 40 minute window of partial before sunset.

Cool, looks like a partial eclipse here. Max partial eclipse (@ 8:19) would be 7 minutes after sunset. Something to look for.

Maximum eclipse is right at sunset in Madison, which might be kind of cool. Looks like 60% or greater which might be the biggest I've seen.

Weather could easily screw this up though.

Early look from the GFS. Maybe some weather issues?

Boy I hope not. I've got the perfect viewing place out here in the country, and I'm too impatient to wait until 2017 for the next good one, haha.

I think there's another partial in 2014 or 2015, but yeah the big show will be in 2017. Sorta hard to plan 5 years ahead but I'm hoping that I will be able to put myself somewhere in the path of totality for that one. Want to see at least one total eclipse before I die. :P

Well if you can wait until April 2024, there will be a total eclipse even closer than the one in 2017.

The 2017 eclipse should be quite a show. Of course you can't predict where the clouds will be!
Looks like Paducah, KY will be the best place to be for that one!

Still looking close on whether clouds will hold off long enough to get a good show in...

I made an eclipse database at work for all the big LAF eclipses through 2100. www.jconline.com/eclipse.

Big ole cloud shield moving in, I really hope it doesn't ruin this whole thing. Talk about timing too, no clouds for days and then they move in when the only solar eclipse in decades is happening. Of course :axe:

I just remembered this is going on later. Storms are pretty likely here. Will have to have a lucky break in the clouds to see it I'm afraid.

If it looks like it's going to be clear around the WI/IA border I'm going to head there. Probably have to make that decision soon. It's already clearing in NW IA so there's some hope.

Line of t-storms looks to be hanging out over the lake at sunset. Not sure I'm going to see anything. Meh.

Nothing but high thin cirrus left here, so the eclipse is visible. No sure how the pics will turn out though.

Drove out to SE Clinton Co. just in time to see the sun disappear behind clouds for the final time. Bummer.

The eclipse is starting in Topeka right now. I don't have eclipse goggles, but I'm wearing multiple pairs of sunglasses.

Just took this pic at sunset here at the shore. Unfortunately just a partial eclipse here. Basically, the best place to view one of these is over a lake, at maximum eclipse, just before sunset. So, some lake in West Texas is likely going to have some incredible pics.

This is what the eclipse calculator has for Topeka. Just about the whole bottom of the sun is covered right now.

Edit, just my typical luck...a tiny a$$ cloud has moved in front of the sun.

I barely got a glimpse of the eclipse through the clouds. FTW: The sunset was quite colorful tonight.

Awesome photo Trent!

Three photos. Lots of trees around here, found a clearing but I wasn't thinking and parked by power lines. Was then too late to move. BLAH!

Shot with my Canon Powershot through welding glass.

I saw about 30% of the sun covered before a pesky cloud bank moved in, would have seen 50-60% otherwise. Awe inspiring, and brought back memories of the 2005 solar eclipse in South Florida.

I got a brief peak at it through a thin rain curtain out over Lake Michigan. The disk was really blurry from the rain though so you could just barely make it out. Maybe a polarizing filter would have made it more clear but it was starting to pour and the camera was getting wet so I gave up. There was a sweet lightning storm out over the water after dark though. I put together a video of the whole thing here.
