I can't stop watching that Caruthersville video.
I either have brains or lack bravery because after seeing that thing coming I would have dug a ditch in my back yard and buried myself.

ThanksAgreed, I don't see the problem with that adjective given the ostensibly large density of people in the mall.
How many malls have been hit around 5pm on a weekday by a high end EF-4? Saying it happens all the time is a bit over the top, seeing as we don't have countless high end EF-4s on a yearly basis nor are they in close proximity to malls. His post implied that a strong tornado had never hit a large retail location before. There's nothing hypothetical about it. It happens all the time and there are plenty of case studies.

I feel you overstated it. See my comments above-- I don't have anything else to add. As a courtesy to others in the thread, I'm not going to go around in circles with this-- didn't mean to make it this whole thing. How many malls have been hit around 5pm on a weekday by a high end EF-4? Gosh, thanks to you all who introduced some of these missed treasure videos. I just have to chuckle tho when I know our weatherboard's most famous hurricane hunter (Josh) is just wetting his appetite awaiting his dream masterpiece chase after the last few years of disappointments(except Jove). I am really hoping for neutral ENSO through summer at least. But while awaiting tropical season lets hope some more tornado chasers get some great vids next few months...
It's like you can perfectly read my current state of mind. Bingo.
And, yeah, a lot of the clips in this thread are really inspiring. No, I don't chase tornadoes, but I'm always going to be turned on by any extreme winds caught on camera.

Yeah I think it is best to just agree to disagree on this. We both have our opinions on the matter no sense like you said to go on about it.I feel you overstated it. This one is definitely frightening as you watch the tornado growing in size through the video as it moves directly toward the location the video was shot. To me the Andover KS tornado is top 3 easily in the frightening department.

Cool find. The occasional appearance of people reacting in the foreground adds an interesting touch. Agreed Re: Andover. That one event produced so much hot porn. It was just a very photogenic tornado-- in a populated area, well-lit, etc. This one is definitely frightening as you watch the tornado growing in size through the video as it moves directly toward the location the video was shot. Actually credit goes to someone else on this one, it has been posted before on the forum, I want to say Cyclone77 over in the GLOV might have posted it before. Yes the reactions of the people walking down the street and then them seeing the tornado and a 'holy ****' reaction happens.Cool find. This is probably my favorite video of the Andover tornado...some of the most incredible motion I have ever seen (perhaps the strongest actually).

I remember seeing this a couple of years ago on some Discovery/NatGeo show.

The flying mobile home at 4:01 is insane.

There's some of those in those Andover videos I posted as well, likely as it was demolishing the Golden Spur Park as it maxed out.

Just gorgeous, gorgeous footage. Omg. So much awesomeness in this-- so many cool details-- and the quality is so good. Yummy. The yapping dudes are annoying, but the footage is too good for them to ruin it.The chasers are annoying, but the video itself is ridiculous.
Small detail: the tornado looked to be moving in a wider envelope of very high winds. That aluminum utility building (starting around 3:40) is well outside the vortex, and yet it's getting thrashed-- the roof is shredding-- and the flag atop the roof is yanking and flapping in a way that suggests a full hurricane-- or something close.

Whoa
The Rice school is completely rebuilt, I drove by it about 3 weeks ago and it looks exactly the same as before the tornado.

This is spooky. I found it eery watching the lights flicker out once they pass Lowes with the tornado baring down in the background. I'm guessing a lot of these businesses in the beginning were wiped out.

Yeah they were, everything until about 2:44 in the video was wiped out.
Silver Lining tours was the chase company and the co-owner, Dr. David Gold said it was the scariest experience they have ever had. They stopped in Joplin to get gas because the cell they were chasing (the northern supercell) was dying when the 2nd cell rapidly developed and they had about 45 seconds to spare when they were clear of the path.
The guy who mentioned taking shelter in Home Depot is chilling, considering Home Depot was flattened.

So far I nominate this video as the best one yet in this thread. Seriously, that is some of the best tornado footage I have ever seen.

I am amazed that so many people were on the road with that monster tornado not far away.

Here's a real treasure from the tornado that hit Grand Isle, LA, last week. Skip ahead to 4:35, when the funnel passes so close that the house right across the street blows apart. It's spectacular, graphic footage-- some of the best I've seen-- the kind that reminds me of why I love violent windstorms. Just awesome:

That's what I posted above but I could not figure out how to embed the video like you did (just provided the link). That is one of the craziest video's ever. It is almost laughable to see that thing pass right next door to him, and then form into a classic looking tornado thanks to the ground debris it starts to pick up as it slowly drifts away.

Oh, sorry-- missed your post. I quickly scanned the thread for embedded videos-- to check first to see if anyone had posted it-- and my eye passed right over your post. That's what I posted above but I could not how to embed the video like you did (just provided the link). For the future: to embed a video, take the URL and put it in media tags: URL

I realize that the media tags don't show up in the my last post-- so it probably doesn't make sense. it should look like this, without asterisks:Cool, thanks!

Does that make sense?

TWC showed the radar of the Grand Isle tornadic cell. It wasn't the typical waterspout coming ashore, it was an actual tornado moving in from the water. I am assuming the camera was filming it approaching from the North.
I never quite know the right words to use, there are the usual tornado over water waterspouts, then there are the actual severe thunderstorm produced tornado over water type waterspout, and I don't know if there is a term to differentiate between the two.
I have seen "typical' waterspouts over the Gulf, and 'tropical funnels' as well, which are something like typical waterspouts except over coastal counties/parishes in Texas/Louisiana.

That black camper looking thing right in front of him around the 4:15min mark gets sucked into the tornado. You can see it hit the white camper around 4:28 and disappear from view. That's how close he was from getting sucked into that thing.

1998 Survalance cameras have lower resolution than todays Cell Phones. Still looks pretty damn scary. One of the more unique tornado outbreaks too.
