WINTER OF 2011-12 IN PICTURES - SE MICHIGAN

Recommended Posts

Now that spring is here, time for my annual pictoral recap of the winter.

But first...Here you will find my previous winter recaps, of the much snowier winters of 2010-11, 2009-10, 2008-09, and 2007-08. Its almost embarassing to see the snow pics of these winters compared to 2011-12 lol.

NOW...2011-12

Its certainly a winter we all want to forget, from the failed predictions of Fall to the fact we are coming off an epic stretch of winters. But yes, there WAS some winter this year. So now the pics, in chronological order.

NOVEMBER 2011 - 0.6"

After a few of flurries from time to time, winters first measurable snow came the last day of the month

11-30-11: First snow

3004-800.jpg

DECEMBER 2011 - 4.8"

A mild, bare winter month with just a few wintry days, certainly the complete opposite of the white Dec of 2010. Though 15 days had SOME snow on the ground at obs time, 12 of the 15 days were a paltry T.

12-5-11: 2.4" of wet snowplaster made for a pretty night

3008-800.jpg

3010-800.jpg

12-10-11: one of Decembers few below normal days was actually very bright

JANUARY 2012 - 10.9"

Snow fell frequently the second half of the month, but again, unlike last winter, the snowcover did not last

1-15-12: First, it was nice to wake to a fresh few inches of powder

3019-800.jpg

Then in the evening...2" of 40-1 ratio fluff fell in 2 hours, briefly bringing snow depth to 4". Never saw such puffy snow!

3022-800.jpg

1-16-12: Winter in the Park

3026-800.jpg

3031-800.jpg

1-20-12: 2.5" of sugar packed-powder snow (10-1 ratio) fell with temps in the teens

3037-800.jpg

1-21-12: One of the few times a very arctic feel was in the air with 3" of fresh powder on the ground and crisp, cold air

3042-800.jpg

1-21-12: Even in futile winters, mall snow piles dont disappoint

3043-800.jpg

1-21-12: Cold winter sunset

3044-800.jpg

1-29-12: Heavy Snow Squalls made for rapidy changeable visibility, total snow on the day 1.7"

FEBRUARY 2012 - 9.0"

The Feb 10th arctic-front and surprisingly heavy snow accompanied by it was a pleasant surprise and highlight of the winter, but once again, the month was a pitiful shadow of its 2011 predecessor

2-10-12: Arctic front plows in, conditions deteriorate in seconds

3065-800.jpg

3067-800.jpg

3073-800.jpg

2-11-12: Morning after the winter of 2011-12's biggest snowstorm dropped 4.9"

3075-800.jpg

3082-800.jpg

The 4.9" snow was accompanied by drifts to a foot (more in open fields)

3080-800.jpg

2-12-12: Winter Dusk

3084-800.jpg

2-14-12: A 1.2" snow fell atop snowpack (rarity this year) for a wintry Valentines Day

3085-800.jpg

2-24-12: 2.2" of quickly melting snow was like mashed potatoes

3095-800.jpg

MARCH 2012- 0.2"

A few dustings of snow early in the month gave way to an epic March torch

3-9-12: Convective snow showers gave ominous sky conditions

I did get to enjoy the most gorgeous winter scenery Id ever seen when I spent the weekend of Mar 2-4th in Grayling where they saw a foot of cement snow plaster/engulf everything in a very thick carpet of snow. Tons of pics below:

http://www.americanw...rd-worthy-snow/

So as of March 18th, we sit at just 25.5" of snow on the season imby. Should no more snow fall this season, it will be my least snowy since I started measuring in 1995-96 (my lowest was 27.2" in 1997-98). Of course, 17 years is a small sample size, especially when you are coming off the EPIC stretch of winters we are here. From a historical context, the 26.0" that fell at DTW does not even place in the top 20 least snowy winters, so as much of a trainwreck this winter was, it certainly could be worse. Will certainly gladly update this thread if a spring snowstorm occurs! Also I will move this to the storm pics forum after a while.

Awesome write up, and pictures of course!

Thanks :)

As Ive said before, like it or not, we WERE due for a stinker winter for sure, lets hope we got it out of the way and return to snow blitzes in 2012-13!

For an idea of how bad it was, here is my seasonal snowfall and snowcover for the last 10 years imby in Wyandotte, MI. Official Detroit averages show 42.7" of snow and about 50 days of 1"+ snowcover, but the average has clearly been higher the last 10 years.

2011-12: 25.5" - 20 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2010-11: 69.4" - 81 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2009-10: 46.1" - 58 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2008-09: 64.8" - 62 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2007-08: 78.2" - 69 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2006-07: 36.3" - 49 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2005-06: 41.9" - 46 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2004-05: 82.1" - 65 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2003-04: 38.0" - 60 days w/ 1"+ snowcover

2002-03: 69.0" - 67 days w/ 1"+ snowcover
